Lord Winston I have a new puppy who is 4 months old and I am trying to wee wee pad train him and am having a difficult time. I want to keep him as an inside dog:) |
check out this thread, it is the system I use, imo it's better than wee pads, costs a lot less too. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/gen...while-ago.html |
Oh another thing I like about this system, is that its completely unique, Harley actually doesn't know that he has the option to pee on grass. Sometimes he'll poo on a walk on the concrete, but he never pees when we're out. it's great for us cause we do agility and you get eliminated if your dog uses the bathroom on the course. :) Also make sure that even if you keep him as an "inside dog" that he get plenty of exercise, and walks. Luckily with these guys they are small enough to exercise inside in inclement weather, but they really do enjoy walks outside and interacting with other dogs. |
The main thing to training them on pads is to keep a vigilant eye on them and when they look like they are ready to go potty, pick them up, run them over to where you have the pad and place them on it. Use some word association with the pad - we say "go potty on the paper" to Jack. And I would make him stay on the pad until he went potty. As soon as he would go on the paper, I would praise him like there was no tomorrow! Good luck! |
Keep him in an expen when you can't watch him. Cover the entire floor with peepads, and gradually over time (maybe every week) take up just one pad until you are down to just one pad. When he is outside the expen, watch him LIKE A HAWK and take him to the pad every 30 minutes or so (he is veeery young, patience is key here) give him a keyword (potty or whatever you choose, but stick with that one word or phrase), and praise praise praise and more praise when he does it right! Welcome to Yorkies they are wonderful! We have a general training section here if you browse it you can find a lot of good advise about training your wee one :) |
Thank you. I will now try several wee wee pads |
