Unusually Large Vulva? All my Yorkies are spay and neutered but Mimi. Due to health reasons, it was reccomended at the time to not spay her. We will be taking her in next month to see if this changed. The girls' all have rather tiny size pee pees, and Mimi has a huge one. I hate to post this question but I'm wondering if this is due to her not being spayed or if there could be an issue. Since, I've never had a dog not spayed I"m not sure. She's always had a larger then normal as compared to my others. Now, this morning, I did notice a tiny spot of blood from there, so I think she may be getting her period. I didn't expect it. She's only a year old and was told that due to her size (She's only 3 lbs) that should would probably not get it until at least 15 months or more. The size has always been this big, even before what I think is her period. Just wondering if this is due to her not being spayed, like a male when he's neutered it all disapears. Don't want to sound ignorant just not sure as all but Mimi are fixed Thanks. Elaine |
Yes it sounds like she is coming into heat. They swell during this time . |

Yes a male dog will smell her. If you are with her it should be okay. She could be in heat for a whole month. Each dog varies. But I would say at least three weeks. It can get kind of messy. Mine have always cleaned themselves well. But if she is on your furniture she may get blood on it. |

Someone I use to live with had a mini wiener dog, a female. Around the time of her first heat her genitalia began to swell much larger than normal. Even though she was a very small dog, she bled a lot and we ended up getting her the doggy "pad/diapers" and kept her off furniture. |
Sounds like she is coming into heat. The swelling can be very obvious. Dogs are like us, some have small feet, some big, some have tiny ears some have huge, you get what I mean. Keep her away and safe from any male dogs. The heat can last about a month with 3 weeks being about right. She will still be in heat AFTER the bleeding stops for about 7 days. She can get preg. |
Uni's is huge LOL. I didn't get her spayed until she was almost 4 yrs. She did not go into her first heat until about 13 months, and I think I read somewhere that said if your dog doesn't go into heat by 14 months you need to see a vet. I think. When she was in heat her vulva swelled even bigger. She did not have a lot of blood during her heats, but you could def tell. Also her nipples got bigger and stayed that way since her first heat. However, my foster Chloe, had a litter before but they did not survive and she was spayed during her c-section. Her vulva and nipples are very small like she was spayed before her first heat. So I agree, every dog is different. A 3 lbs dog can be spayed, if there is no other underlying condition. Sugarmamma's Sugar is barely 3 lbs and she actually is double spayed. Long story. :( She did just fine. |
Since I have a Doggy Door, both mine go outside to potty. When I need to check to see if a female has started her period, I just get a paper towel, fold in into a 4x4 and blot it up against her back there. If the discharge is very red, that starting, and when it looses it brightness or even has a yellow tint, thats farther into her period. HA, My Male Sneakers is unreliable when it comes to someone telling about if a female is about to go into heat. He "maintains" them all the time. |
