Just had neutering done.:-( Our Alphie is 7mo. old and had his surgery today. He seems miserable. He won't eat, or drink. He seems as though he can't get comfortable. Is this normal? I realize it hasn't even been 24 hours, but we at a loss as how to help him. He won't even get up for hours at a time.:love: Any suggestions? |
Sounds normal. Likely still be groggy from the meds. Not sure what vets recommend for food and water after surgery. I wouldn't worry about the food part till tomorrow. If water's OK, you might try an eye-dropper and squirting just a bit in his mouth. But, again, I'm not sure if vets recommend water right away. I remember mine just being miserable that first day. Just comfort him and he should be back to his old self in the coming days. Be sure to keep him from getting too frisky, though. |

I totally agree~the anesthesia they are given to put them to sleep during their surgery will make them tire for about a day. I'm sure by the morning he will be feeling like his normal self again :) |
Were you given pain meds for him? Max was really uncomfortable his first night and had to have pain meds after the ones he had at the office wore off. Our vet recommended half or less of regular dinner. As Mike wrote above, if he doesn't eat, don't worry. Just make sure his gums stay moist and pink and try to get him to lap up a little water through the eyedropper or off of your finger. |
I just got my kassidy spayed 2 days ago, she's about 5 months. The first day was pretty sad. The vet said no food and water until the next day, however we can give her a small amount of ice cubes. The very next morning, she was lively and hungry. We cooked some plain skinless chicken breast, we boiled it and let it rest and mixed in some rice. She ate all of it and wanted more, but I restricted a little bit. Her pain meds were liquid based that was already measured by the vet to give through her mouth via syringe once per day for two days. I cheated and put some peanut butter around the area and shot it through lol, she's fine with that. Good luck and I'm sure your little one will cheer up soon. |
I'm surprised they didn't send him home with pain meds to keep him comfortable. They usally sleep most of the time, which is good. He needs to be keep in his kennel and quiet until tomorrow he can eat alittle bit of something. I would not give him nothing but ice chips until morning because you sure don't want him to start vomiting. Hope the little guy feels better tomorrow. |
Sounds normal - he just had surgery. It usually takes a day for them to start to feel better and the anesthesia to get out of their system. He will be a little sore and if the vet sent you home with pain meds, they can make him a little groggy, too. I hope he's feeling better this morning.:) |
I hope Alphie is feeling better this morning. |
Extreme lethargy is normal (caused by the anesthesia). Inability to get cnfortable can usually be controlled with pain meds (did they give him any/send you home with any?). |
Thank you so much for putting me at ease. We are approx. 24 hrs post-op and much better. We normally crate him at bed time, but last night let him sleep in our room on the carpet. Needless to say, I didn't get much sleep, checking to see where he was/how feeling all night. checked at 4 am. and he was gone. He had decided to go to the couch. UP on the couch! He even got A LITTLE excited to us when we found him. But today, he is eating fine, but lays around a lot and doesn't seem to be comfy in 1 spot for long. BUT after last night, he has gained a lot of ground. So thanks again. |
Glad to here he is doing better today! |
They bounce back the next day. They are tough little guys! |
Sooo glad to hear your baby is doing better. :) |
