Bar spacing on pet gate for puppy? Just purchased a yorkie pup about 3 weeks ago and shopping around for a gate. He is about 13 weeks and 2lbs currently. I need a wide gate for a 50" opening and being very particular with the look of it. I found one I really like here... http://www.munchkin.com/easy-close-metal-gate-extra-tall-wide It looks like the bar spacing is 2" from what I am reading on other sites. Is that too large for my pup, I don't want to risk him getting stuck trying to fit through the bars. I don't mind rigging something up temporarily however if it will be too small for him to fit through as an adult. Thanks for the help!! -Mike |

Mike, First of all, that's a real nice piece of equipment, anyone should be proud to have it installed in their house. However, I think your suspicion's are valid. My little Becca is really an escape artist, and I'm sure your little one, could get through those spaces. Here's a temporary (and removable) addition you might make... There's some metal screen they call "Hardware Cloth". It comes in 24" widths, and you can buy a piece which is 51" (the width of your gate) long. Then, just use some string or a few of those wire ties like comes on a Bread Loaf, to block the lower section until he grows enough where he can't get his shoulders through the openings. Then just take it down, and wrap it around one of your plants to keep the Squirrels out :D |
Darn this 5 minute edit rule... Mike, you'll need to get enough extra to cover the side panels as well. Maybe about 7" total. |
Thanks for the quick replies! Yeah I figured I would use something temp to keep him in. I can't imagine him staying small enough as an adult that he would be able to get through...lol. I'll put the order into day. The large cardboard pieces I have been using are getting annoying, plus he learned how to scale and jump over them. Amazing since they are about 15" high....lol. |
We wove plastic type window screening back and forth thru our outdoor fencing to keep Ziva from escaping thru the bars- luckily we left it up because now the new pup is giving it a try! I just ordered an IRIS ex pen, glad I got the 36" high, she is climbing already! |
Yea, we used plastic webbing also and cable tied it to the fencing top rail and lapped it down so they couldn't go under and on the gate itself, but had to use a door sweep on the actual gate too. There was enough space for Sophie to get thru without even slowing down so we got creative with the aluminum door sweep vertically between the gate and the jam part. You have get to get up early to out smart these Yorkies! |
I'll agree that yorkies are great at escaping. My Lucy would climb OVER the gate. Just put her little feet in the openings and scale the wall. We even tried two gates stacked and she went over THAT!! Luckily she wasn't hurt in her jump over. My husband attached some plexiglass to the inside so she couldn't get a foothold. Problem solved! |
HA, I enjoy hearing of how creative our little ones are. but... That's EXACTLY what they were bread to do ! The Terrier Breeds were "constructed" to be able to function on their own, think things through without Human intervention, and be the excellent "Varmeteers" that we know them to be. And, that included them getting from Point A to Point B on their own. It's so good to hear that the Breed is holding true to the original intent. It's not their fault, that we occasionally disagree with them, on where Point B should be :D |

Get their shoulders through?? HA, ya sure, all Sprocket needs is to be able to get his head through and he is gone. We tried the very nice baby gate, didn't work, added webbing, didn't work, ground cloth (like outside kind), didn't work, he just can't be trusted NOT to wiggle through. To run, to chase, it's just too much fun. I won't say they can't be trained not to break out, but we sure haven't been able to make it happen. We just work around it. I think the comment "true to the breed" is so right. And then they come back to the fence/gate on the "other" side and side and wait to be let back in with the "who me?" look, you're running around yelling the dogs name the neighbors are looking, you're going crazy, and what do you find, sweetness and light sitting carefully on the outside of the gate. Its no wonder my neighbors think I'm the crazy dog lady LOL |

We use baby gates inside for boundaries. They all 3 have the run of the dining room, since its tiled and any accidents can be cleaned up with bleach water. |
We had a gate up for about half an hour before discovering that Levi, full-grown, could easily walk through the bars. We have yet to find a nice-looking gate that the little monster cannot fit through. :p We did find some mesh-type covering for our outdoor deck - but it's nothing I'd want to cover an indoor gate with. |
