putting on weight at long last My little Peggy was really skinny when we first adopted her a few months ago, we could feel all her ribs and her backbone was very prominent, she was also very shivery and obviously felt the cold so I bought her a coat - 'small' size, but it was too big and I had to exchange it for an 'extra-small'. I have just been to buy her a waterproof coat for when she is out in the stable yard and the 'small' that I bought for her was too tight  she now needs the next size up. I am so pleased :), although I knew she had put on weight, we haven't really noticed it as we see her every day. I am now going to have to watch her weight to make sure she doesn't get too fat!!! |
how did you get her to eat so well. My 15 week yorkie is 2pound. He does not eat well. He will not eat if i am not near him. Please give me some advise. Thanks;) |
What I do might sound a bit mean, but it just replicates what would happen in a dog pack (I know Yorkies don't naturally live in packs!:D) If she doesn't eat her food within about 10 minutes I remove the food, and she doesn't get any more until her next meal, this lets her know that food will be coming regularly but that she needs to eat it straight away. I don't like doing this, I feel really horrible, but it didn't seem to bother her and worked within a day or so. I can't leave the food around for her all the time as my other dog would eat it anyway, so either way if she doesn't eat it - it disappears. She has a great appetite now and eats as much as my border terrier :) I hope your puppy is eating properly soon, as long as he is developing well and putting weight on that is the main thing, but it might be worth getting your vet to check him if not. cheers |
Good advice. My doggies eat in their crate but the still only get 15 min.s then i pick it up. |
thanks for all the advice I did do that, but the problem is if I am leaving then he will follow me. if i stand right next to it then he will eat. He is 16 weeks old and weight only 2pd. I have him for 2 weeks now and he has not gain any weight. should I be worry? |
I leave food out for my two (12 lbs & 7 lbs) 24/7. They eat what I'd call a "full" meal twice a day (4A & 4P), and nibble several times a day in-between meals. Some days go by, and I think they don't eat anything, but, I'm sure they grab a snack or two without me knowing. I've always just let them eat anytime they want, and both mine have good weight and are active. On the other hand, there are some days (infrequently) when I have to refill their bowls twice in a day. This method has been extremely convenient ! |
Thanks you all for the wonderful tips. |
