Why such a huge prices??? Hello Everyone, I am getting ready to purchase a yorkie, and i have never had a dog before. I found a breeder that I think is ok. I asked her questions and all the info that I needed to find out and she answered with full explanation. I did my research on the internet and have one question. Why on earth people charge such an outrages prices. Yesterday I found a web page that was selling small breed for $10,000!!! Are these people insane??? Anyways, my questions is how these people set prices for dogs. If I want to purchase a puppy in rage between $500 and $700 does that mean I am getting worse puppy then people that are paying over $1000? Does it mean that the dog might be sick and the breeder just wants to get rid of it??? What is the average price for yorkie pup? I also went to puppy stores in my area and they told me prices between $1500 and $2200, and I cannot afford that much. I would really appreciate help. Thanks annette22 |
$10,000 is insane! You can find yorkies for MUCH less money. It doesn't mean you are getting a worse dog at all. Also, do not ever buy a dog from a pet store. They get their dogs from puppy mills. If you don't know what a puppy mill is, just type it in in the search bar in here, that'll tell you. Good luck, and welcome to yorkietalk. |
our puppies here in canada range from 500.00 to 3000.00 or above depending on if you want pet or show!! Do not buy from a puppy store, many sad stories which I am sure you'll hear! If you have found a responsible & reputable breeder and are happy with them ....stay! We paid 800.00 & 900.00 for our furbabies and both are in perfect health and came from a reputable breeder! Our kidlets would never make show but none the less they are perfect ,mischievious, lively & the most wonderful companions Our family has ever had!!........ |
Location and demand set price. I think it depends where you go. Pet stores usually have the highest prices and sickest dogs. I bougt my Yorkies for $700 a piece almost 1-1/2 years ago and because of their popularity the breeder is now selling them for considerably more. They are of pet quality, meaning they don't meet the strict show qualities. Most people cannot even tell the difference between a show and pet quality. I don't know where you reside in IL. but you might be able to find a cheaper breeder in Fort Wayne, Indiana or South Bend. |

You can find them for less, some people are just crazy charging those prices. I paid $700 for Roxy :p |
We just moved from Illinois so I know you can find a very nice Yorkie puppy in most areas of the state for a very reasonable price. We paid $700.00 for Jo when he was 16 weeks, he's almost 1 year old now, he weighs 3 pounds and he's perfectly healthy. Now that we're in Florida we bought our second one, Riley, who is 6 months old, he's healthy and also weighs 3 pounds...we paid $500.00 for him at 13 weeks. You can check with shelters and Yorkie rescue groups to see if they have any available. Have you checked the Tradin' Post and local newspaper ads? |
[QUOTE=annette22]Hello Everyone, I did my research on the internet and have one question. Why on earth people charge such an outrages prices. Yesterday I found a web page that was selling small breed for $10,000!!! Are these people insane??? Anyways, my questions is how these people set prices for dogs. ========================================= The answer to this question is BECAUSE THEY CAN! A breeder or broker can set the price as high as they wish too. It is the uneducated buyer who gets sucked into these SCAMMERS. That's exactly what they are scammers. No pet/companion is worth $10,000 or even over $2,000. If I want to purchase a puppy in rage between $500 and $700 does that mean I am getting worse puppy then people that are paying over $1000? Does it mean that the dog might be sick and the breeder just wants to get rid of it??? ================================== Again it only means a breeder sets her prices for what the market will purchase them. Sometimes it also means a less quality dog.....one who may be unhealthy but that's not always the case. What is the average price for yorkie pup? I also went to puppy stores in my area and they told me prices between $1500 and $2200, and I cannot afford that much. I would really appreciate help. Thanks ===================================== The average price for a well bred pet/companion in and around Texas and Louisiana is $800 to $1,500. You should be able to find a really nice pet for $800 sometimes from a show breeder. Also do not get set on a "puppy".....there may be some very nice young individuals available for $500 to $800.....show breeders may keep them for almost a year before deciding to place them in a companion home. Yorkies are a fickle breed!! They will bond at any age to their human.....they will love with all their being anyone who loves them! And as a side note......If the PAWS bill #1139 passes in Congress it will be about 200 times harder to find a well bred social dog......the PAWS bill will force many small breeders to stop breeding leaving only the commerical USDA kennels or pet store puppies as sources for a puppy. Also the prices will probably skyrocket due to less puppies available and more demand in the market. For more information...go to http://www.pet-law.com/ D |

Thanks a lot everyone ... this really helps... Jo-Jo, would you be able to give me a reputable breeder that you purchased your puppy from? |
I live in Gurnee, Il and i purchased Cali at 9 weeks of age in August and she was 1500.00 the breeder said it was because she was the best of the litter and the smallest. I think after joining Yt she was charging for a "teacup" even though I did not go looking for one, I beleive she was just the runt, but the cutest! She is 22 weeks and 3 lbs so I think she will end of average size 4-5 lbs but her littermates were sold for 1,000.00 as they were a little bigger. |
Hi Annette. I see that you live in the Chicago area and are my age :) I can try to help you find a reasonably priced puppy. Stewie was $475 and I bought him on the N. Side of Chicago. His littermates were priced at more, but none were outrageous. |

Respectfully I submit that no one should have to pay $2,000 or more for a pet/companion. For a breeding and/or show puppy.....YES.....but come on....not for a companion! When a breeder prices her puppies that high....she is leaving out an awful lot of good and wonderful homes......people who would make wonderful puppy parents....but simply cannot afford $2,000 plus for a DOG. Think about it. Don't get me wrong.....I must get a fair price for puppies or I cannot continue....I guess it's like I said before....what one person thinks is fair.....another thinks it's overpriced. And that goes for the current trend of selling rare colors.....gold, brown or parti's or even "biewer"....if it's sold as a companion....then it's a darn shame to price them so high. And I love the parti-colored Yorkies. LOL PS......I am a show breeder......I do have champion stock here....and I have three Yorkies from BIS parents.....but that's not really an excuse to demanded woefully high prices for pets. I am aware that many show breeders sell their pet puppies for $2,000 plus.....do you think that really makes them better pets?? No I don't think so! D PPS.....and i have been known to drop my price if a person convinces me that they would give the dog a forever and wonderful home... D |

We paid $400 for Lacey. Don't jump all over me because my parents purchased her from a pet store. They did not know anything about puppy mills. Don't worry, we won't be purchasing from a pet store this time. From a breeder only. We bought Lacey in 1992. But, we were lucky. She was a very healthy dog with no problems. Until she got kidney failure at age 13. That was due to old age. It wouldn't of matter where we would of got her from. Organs start to give out at certain age. We have been searching everywhere for a yorkie puppy for the last few months. We were a little surprized on how high the prices went up since 1992. My mom was set on a price of $650. We did find a man nearby that was selling his puppies for $500. His litter was due on November 22nd. But, we were on the bottom of the list. We called the man and left a message on the 22nd, but he never returned our calls. So, I guess the dogs were already sold to someone else. We found a breeder nearby that is selling her females for $900. So, after a LOT of begging, my mom just may end up getting one of her puppies. I told her I can go in half with her. She really did not want to pay that much at ALL. But, we just can't seem to find anything in our area under $800 especially for a female. We also found 1 other breeder nearby whose dogs are also due the second week of December. Her prices start at $800. We will go with her if the other lady does not work out because it is no guarantee she will produce a female. The other lady has 4 litters due all in December! So we are almost guaranteed a female if we go with her. |
Cajungal - Is your heart set on a female? If it's just for a pet, you might want to consider a male and get a better price. Just a thought... |
Yes, our heart is set on a female. Now, I love all dogs male or female. I would of been happy either way. I don't really have much say because I still live at home with my parents. (Will move out as soon as I get a better paying job, pay off some bills and save up some money.) And my mom is paying for most of the dog. But, my mom wants only a female. We only owned female dogs before. And my mom always has our dogs paper trained and are strictly house dogs. She does not like the cocking of the legs that males do. So, we are going to get a female even if it means paying $200 more. |

My mom will keep the dog once I move out. She won't let me take it once I leave. But, if I leave, I will live nearby so I can still see her all the time. And then I will have to find a place that allows pets and start saving again for my own yorkie. Even though I am 29, it might still be awhile before I can move out anyway. I know I am too old to still be living at home. But, I have to pay off my car and my credit card first. And that will still take awhile. I have a year left before the car is paid off. |
Oh! You're never too old to live at home! Haven't you heard? Everybody's 20 somethings have moved back home! :D |

I totally agree, if he or she comes from champion blood lines, is a show dog with a winning history and has a great pedigree and temperament. and if it could pass the canine good citizen test and be a therapy dog. I would be willing to pay that much. |

The prices ARE NUTS FOR YORKIES and nothing anyone can say will make me think otherwise - If I were single - I would NOT HAVE a yorkie because there is no way I would be able to afford the prices I'm seeing lately ..THAT would really REALLY SUCK...I can't imagine my life without my girls - |
