males vs female yorkies

Can anyone give me some personal insight on having a male yorkie vs a female? Is one gender sweeter than the other or does it just an individual factor? I want a sweet, smart and energetic puppy that gets along with its family including other pets. Hyper does bother me. I just don't want a pet that is stubborn and stuck up.

Females tend to be more loving towards you... But sometimes thats not the case... Males tend to be independent, and playful, and they aren't really CUDDLE MONSTERS... but sometime thats not the case... These dogs are GREAT family pets (male, or female). And it does depend on the dog... To get the dog you want with a personality to match your description... you would need to set a date to meet up with a breeder (take your family too) and spend some one on one time with the puppy/puppies they have to offer and get to know its personality.

My experience is the exact opposite of this. My boy is definitely more affectionate and dependent on me than my girl. In my experience, girls love you, but the boys are in love with you. This tends to be true for cats and any other breed of dog, as well. In the end, each dog has its own personality and both genders make absolutely wonderful pets.

I agree with you i was just speaking about the breed in general... because my maxy is affectionate towards me too... he likes to cuddle. I think in general the female is more affectionate. But it depends on the specific dog itself.

topknot 09-25-2011 06:42 AM

Just as people have different personalities, dogs do too. I think both, males and females, are sweet and loving. One should know that males are just as sweet as females. Since you are spaying/neutering either is a good match.

 I couldn't agree more. My male Yorkie has far more affinity with me than any girl dog I have ever 'owned'. He's always at my side or needing a 'pick-up' or an 'on-the-floor' soft stroke - he's amazing with the love he needs and gives back. The way he looks at me just melts my heart :embar: Sally + Harry x

Exactly I have a female that is more cuddly than my male but a different male and it could be a different story. I have cuddly female cats too

I agree that personality is something that is not gender based - it's just on an individual basis. The sweetest Yorkie I've ever known was the female we had when I was growing up. I have a female now who is a love, but she's so NOT like Chelsea was. I also know a male yorkie who was only sweet with his family and hated everyone else and another male Yorkie who thought that everyone in the world was his friend and wanted to play fetch constantly. Yesterday Belle and I met an 8 month old male Yorkie who was such a doll - very calm and sweet and loving.

The advice you were given to meet with a litter and see which Yorkie fits with your personality is definitely good advice! Good luck in your search for your future pup!

I have 2 girls and 2 boys, all of them have different personalities. My Tessie, doesn't like to cuddle and has an attitude, but loves her daddy. My Sassy is super hyper and loves to cuddle with me and can not stand to be away from me. Hobbes is affectionate but doesn't like to cuddle, he is also very sweet and tender hearted, if you correct him he gets sad. Calvin is very sweet and loves to cuddle. Tessie doesn't like to play but my other 3 play great together, except Hobbes wants to be the boss.

Maximo 09-25-2011 08:21 AM

My boys are very sweet, loving, and affectionate.

Keep in mind that Yorkies tend to be high energy even if they are not hyper. They need a lot of exercise and stimulation. Being terriers, they can be headstrong. They are often feisty and proud little doggies.

If you prefer docile and laid back and still want a Yorkie, I would advise looking for one that is not a puppy so that you will have a better idea of personality. You can either adopt from a rescue or look for a breeder who has a slightly older dog.

lovemy3babies 09-25-2011 08:36 AM

Personally, I think it just depends on each yorkie. They all have different personalities and temperaments, whether male or female.

Lovetodream88 09-25-2011 08:39 AM

I have a female and my mom has a male. Callie can be very stubborn at times and she does get mad at people and will not look at or respond to who she is mad at for sometimes hours, but she is very loving and pretty laid back about most things. Sammy my moms yorkie is a very nervous yorkie but other then that he loves people and is good with most things and never seems to be stubborn. Although they both have there hyper moments. I would not change having a girl because has such a great personality. It is harder to find clothing and stuff for boys and everything we have bought Sammy that is not custom we have to sew up some or he pees on it just a side note.

TigerLily84 09-25-2011 09:47 AM

I have a male and female. Lexi is very independent and is sweet but cannot sit still long enough to cuddle. She does however love my DH, she gives him lots of kisses and follows him around everywhere. Max on the other hand is calm, affectionate and overly sweet. He loves me more than Lexi does and he is also more obedient than she is. Lexi gets in moods, one minute she wants my attention then another day she is all about her daddy. Max always loves his mommy :) Lexi also wimpers alot when she wants attention and Max is quieter.

I guess Lexi is a typical woman... mood swings and all. However, she was easier to house train and she is alot cleaner than Max. Lexi would have a fit and literally cry if she accidently peed in her crate, which has never happened because she always makes us know when she needs to go. Max on the other hand pees alot and he doesn't care when or where and it is very hard to break him out of it.

Like everyone said it all depends on the dog's individual personality and the environment they are raised in.

Lexi was my first, so I think she is just spoiled and used to having all the attention.

CouversMom 09-25-2011 11:06 AM

I have a male and a female, and my male is FAR more affectionate than my female. He lives for me and she lives for her brother :p

Rhetts_mama 09-25-2011 02:00 PM

Rhett can't get enough of me, while Scarlett only wants me when it suits her. She's super cuddly with my DH though.

mscat 09-25-2011 02:42 PM

Suzi has always loved everybody. She is on the hyper side , but her favorite thing to do is give kissess to everyone. It depends on the dog , and it's temperment. Spend time with the puppy before choosing one that way you know and have chosen one that best suits you and your family.

nancyf007 09-25-2011 02:50 PM

Riley is much more a lovey than Abby. She has her moments but she is queen and Riley loves to be loved.

viviansnickers 09-25-2011 04:02 PM

I have two boys and they are so different but both are very loving and snuggly. Reesie my younger pup is sooooooooooo hyper and loooooves his mommy. Snickers my three year old is laid back, likes his alone time, and loves his daddy. They are so different! I will admit---- I love boy doggies!!!! :). But nothing against the girls of course! ;)

jenn1381 09-25-2011 04:24 PM

I have one of each. Mya is very shy, when meeting new people she will lay submissively on her back until she is comfortable - then she wants attention and loving. She is a stubborn, stubborn little girl and she could not care less if you are mad at her. She loves people more than other animals.

Oliver is a mommy's girl. He loves me, and one of my friends, and that's about it. He's a puppy mill boy with some obvious abuse in his past, so new people often scare him, especially men. He's also stubbon, and tempremental. Difference is he eventually cares that he's done something wrong and always comes for apologies (kisses). He is obsessed with other dogs, which is why I got Mya. He needs his pack.

Both are very loving and follow me around most of the time. Lots of people think one gender is more affectionate than the other, but I agree with most of the other posters - it all comes down to the dogs personality. Just like people, some like open affection and some don't.

SWHouston 09-25-2011 11:55 PM

Tina,

When it comes to Yorkies, it's POT LUCK !

Their personalities vary as much as the people who seek them. I'm just not sure that when selecting a puppy, that you can tell anything about the way/how it will develop.

I firmly believe, that our Dogs do take on our traits. That's just the way they are naturally, a major part of their instinct to do what we want. And that being why, there is such a variance. I don't deny that there may/probably are, individual strengths and weaknesses in them, which cause a more or less propensity for a certain demeanor.

I have both male and female....
My Male Sneakers, is the older (3 yo now) and was a total puppy, until My Female Becca arrived. That TOTALLY changed him, to a quite stogy and proud Dog, who is very territorial and protective of us. He cuddles, but, it's when he wants it. Becca was 11 weeks old when she arrived, and I think that Sneakers thought that's the way puppies came to be, and that one was HIS ! :D Even now at Becca's age of 1 yo, he still yields a Bone or will break up a tough treat for her, and let her have a Toy if she wants it, and she usually does !

Becca, on the other hand, is the most outgoing Dog ever. She has not met a stranger yet, and her tail has been wagging since the moment she arrived. However, there is a similarity in them. Becca too is selective about cuddling, like Sneakers, she engages when she wants to. I'm not sure if that just happened, or, that she learned that from Sneakers ?

One thing I will point out is...
When it comes to qualifications for being the Alpha, don't think for a minute, that a Female can't handle that job !

As sweet and gregarious as Becca is, she has a dark side, which is just as possessive and territorial as any male I've seen. When she bolts out of the house, it's like she OWNS this place, and who/whatever is out there in the yard, had better leave NOW ! This goes for direct encounters as well, when that happens, she's shoulder to shoulder with Sneakers, and can be just as viscous in her display. Neither has ever bitten anyone, but, I make sure that there is always some "distance" and control over both, when we're out and about. I know this sounds contrary to her nature, but I believe and trust their senses, and don't scold them when they "alarm" and go into a protective mode. I just try to calm them down, and walk around the "situation".

So, we have the "Tmiids" and "Terrors"...
And a lot which is in between as well. I revert to my original statement on them fulfilling our needs, and assuming a posture which reflects our personalities.

The fact is, that I'm rather territorial, I don't like intrusions onto my property or space. I'm very protective of what's mine, material or living, and as you can see... so are my Dogs.

concretegurl 09-26-2011 12:07 AM

I believe there is a reason behind bitch becoming a derogatory word...LOL I'm like Ron White says
Love my boys the best, all dogs are exceptions to rules of thumb and as long as you spay/neuter you're good!

That is the cutest thing ever!!!!! I can NOT wait to get Kaos a little sister. :D

SWHouston 09-26-2011 08:51 AM

Ha yes, Bitch and several other perfectly good words, have been massaged by society into scornful terms. How arrogant can we be !

I understand Ron White's intent, to support the reduction of unwanted animals in our society, but, just to arbitrarily neuter or spay, like a tonsillectomy or appendectomy, is just unreasonable.

I resent that our local government. presumes that I can not control my animals, and irregardless of my attention to their activities, charges me additional fees, just because my Male is not neutered.

The fact is, that both Sneakers and Becca's (they are Brother/Sister) Sire is quite old. And I have not Nurtured Sneakers because he may be required to step into his Father's roll to continue what has proved to be a very stable Bloodline.

Becca, on the other hand, is Spayed...
I really don't like the idea of altering any animal, but there is reason in that approach. However, I'm not sure that the cause for that, was more out of lazyness... not wanting to take the time to make sure that my two didn't couple, or just conformation to popular opinion. Probably the prior.

So, I have one who is, and one who isn't...
I don't think that Spaying Becca, has changed her demeanor much, if at all. But it has Sneakers !

I think he gives her a lot of "slack" (she can really be a pest) because of the hope that at some point, they may make babies together. He frequently "maintains" Becca's hygiene, I presume in hope that at some point, he will detect the right time. Of course, that will not happen now, not with her anyway.

UOO, I think I've drifted off the point a little...
So, in an attempt to reconstitute this, having an animal spayed or nurtured IMHO does not have a major bearing on it's demeanor. No totally different actions or posture in their Pack seem to be evident of that. I am not however disregarding the exception to the rule.

tinalove 09-26-2011 10:04 AM

I think you all right. Our pets take on some of our traits and they are all different. I will try to make sure I get a little guy that fits our family. I know he'll be loved .

concretegurl 09-26-2011 01:46 PM

SW I took serious heat (on a thread here) for saying I don't alter females until they have had 2 or 3 heats.

I previously believed in the behavioral changes that the exposure to certain chemical/horomones released only during heats; the same chemicals (hormones) that cause cancers rates in females to drastically increase...thus the heat I took despite being a responsible owner.

Considering such I'd get any female altered right away in the future for her own health...and save on the ludicrous license fee i had to pay, not to mention boarding and groomers also charge more for unaltered animals-so unfair but hey responsibility costs.

Oh and then there was the "incident" while I just returned home from the hospital with my new skin kid my furkid was in heat and we ended up doing an emergency spay a month earlier than the preset spay...I was shocked at what an unaltered male with do to get to a female in heat!

One of my males isn't neutered...the risk of him going under is too great for me to take atm due to other health issues he has...otherwise yeah he'd be altered too for behavioral reasoning.

oliver44 09-26-2011 02:29 PM

i have only had experience with one male yorkie. he is a people dog, tries to be like what i call a real dog but is more interested in cuddling, he is awesome, don't think you can go wrong with a yorkie, but inate personality is something you cant change or chose. good luck pretty sure its a win win situation. give them love & they will give you more back

Personally, I think males tend to be more loving to female owners, while females prefer their daddies. Just my opinion based on my own experience. Though you mentioned you are bothered by hyper, many small dogs can be classified as hyper, and yorkies usually are a go-go-go type breed. Rizzo only sleeps when i do, and then takes power naps while I'm cooking, cleaning, or am otherwise occupied. But if im just sitting around watching tv or reading a book, Rizzo will force me to play, by rolling his ball to me, and will keep kicking it until I vice in and throw it for him. Just saying, they are energetic and need proper outlets to burn that energy or youll have one naughty yorkie.

My experience as well. As someone else said, my boy is IN LOVE with me, and I with him. :) he's cuddly, and super affectionate. It makes my friend jealous. She has an independent female that does not like to be held, or snuggled with for any period of time.

My boyfriend tries to insist that our female loves him more, but when she's not feeling well, or wants to go outside, or just needs random kisses, it's always Mommy who she comes too! The two of them take naps together on the couch, but Dolly will ALWAYS choose to sleep in my armpit on nights when we let her sleep with us. Even now - he was cuddling with her on the couch, but as soon as he fell asleep, Dolly ran over to be on my lap.

But my BF's sister's yorkie is a male, and even though his sister had him for 2 years by herself, as soon as her boyfriend came into the picture the dog was all about the boyfriend - who didn't even like small dogs!

So I don't think there's any rules to help you!

But I didn't even pick Dolly - I was meeting with a breeder to see if I wanted to purchase from a future litter. Dolly was about 4 months old, leftover from the prior litter, and they were planning on keeping her for themselves. When I was visiting, Dolly ran to me, covered my arms and face in kisses, and then fell asleep in my arms. She threw a fit when I tried to put her down, and tried to crawl inside my coat. So she picked me!

And re: the hyperness- Dolly is pretty high energy, but if I make sure to play fetch, teach tricks, or even just run around in circles with her around the coffee table a few times a day, she's pretty good. I can tell when she needs to get some exercise because she gets really sassy - doing things to get our attention or barking at the littlest noise. Fortunately my BF's dad, sister and both brothers all have dogs about the same age as her, so she's never short of playmates to help her burn off extra energy.
