Caesar has a coat problem I have been having Caesar for about five months. When I got him...his hair was very short and brittle. His hair is very very thin for a yorkie. It seems to be getting a little longer but it is still very thin and dry. I bath him about once a week with baby shampoo and conditioner. I use baby shampoo because I have to clean by his eyes. This kinda shampoo does not burn his eyes. His skin stays really dry though. Is there something that I can do to help his skin? Can I use some dandrif shampoo...like head and shoulders? How do ya'll get your dogs to look so beautiful? |
Please whatever you do DO NOT use human adult shampoo on your baby. in the long run it can cause their hair to fall out. what you want to do is get tearless puppy shampoo (it won't wash out the essential oils the puppy needs for his hair which the baby shampoo could be washing out.) You don't want to use human shampoo on your dog because human heads and dog skin have VERY different PH's. I also recommend using a dog Oatmeal based conditioner. Oatmeal is known for it's moisturizing properites and it's very soothing to the skin. It will also help prevent future dryness and it won't wash out those essentail oils the dog needs. Here is a good website for you. http://www.bcrescue.org/humanshampoo.html |
Ok well I guess I'll be going to the store tomorrow morning to get him some new shampoo and conditioner!!! Thank you so much. I didn't know that was the problem. I thought I was kinda safe using baby shampoo....who would have known baby shampoo has chemicals in it????? |
Here are some more good sites and information for you. http://www.kvh.com.au/Washing%20The%20Dog.html |
A lot of people do use baby shampoo and haven't had problems with it, but your dogs skin could just be more sensitive then theirs. best of luck. |
Yes a lot of people do use baby (tearless) shampoo on their Yorkies. In fact some groomers do also. The Yorkshire Club of American recommends not using human shampoo, but says if you do - be sure it is a high quality shampoo. Chrislynn --- My dog has the exact opposite problem your dog has. (We should put them in a paper bag and shake them up.) My dog certainly does not have dry skin. He is extremely oily. His hair is what a human's hair might be like if they were petted and handled all day. I am still waiting for someone to give me advise about oily hair - and what product or shampoo to use on it. Hope I get an answer. He is getting another bath tomorrow. I have some dog tearless shampoo that will probably last me for a year, but I'll change quickly to anything that might be advised for oily hair. What I'm using for now is Ol'Roy Tearless Gentle Conditioning Shampoo with Vitamin E and Aloe....and it has a "long lasting fresh scent." How about that!!!! It's amazing how many different types of coats one little dog can have - right? Good luck with your little dog's dry skin. Carol Jean |
My little guy only gets a bath every 8 weeks or so, you can bathe them too often, my groomer uses hypoallergenic oatmeal shampoo, chester has sensitive skin. |
I would love to give my pup a bath every eight weeks, but he's a grease monkey. What can I say! Bye - Carol Jean |
What about Mane-n-Tail shampoo and conditioner??? Is that ok??? I use a tearless only around the eye area and rub it in with a tiny tooth brush and rinse. |

oh please stop using baby shampoo ASAP. Johnson's baby shampoo or any other baby shampoo is formulated to removed "cradle cap" from a baby's scalp. This is a dry and harsh shampoo to use on a Yorkie's skin. Get a good quality dog shampoo such as Pet Silk or Bio-Groom...and also their companion coat conditioner. You will see a world of difference in a few weeks. Do not worry.....many people and also breeders advise to use this shampoo on their puppies. D |

Yes I have used Main-N-Tail on my show dogs coats. RINSE WELL and when you think the shampoo is gone......RINSE some more. Also another tip....you never have to use a shampoo full strength on a Yorkie. You can mix it with 50% water. Same with the conditioner. Most Yorkies get a bath once a week for gosh sakes......just how dirty can they be? Reducing the amount of shampoo used on the silk coat means less shampoo left behind to cause itches. <g> Also less essential oils are washed away. D |

baby shampoo is formulated to rid lice and craddle cap, please dont use it on a regular basis ( sometimes use it on nursing moms but rarely) it ruins the natural oils and strips the coat dry. Mane and Tail is what I use (sometimes Plush Puppy) and a human conditioner Panteen Sleek and silky. |
