Dumb Multiple-Pup Question For those of you w multiple dog households, I have a dumb question. My Gidget is pee pad trained. Is there anything special you need to do if you have a multiple dog household w pee pad training? Also, must you separate to feed or when you go away and leave them at home? |
Like what with peepads? You just have to change them more often. Depends on the dogs. Mine have to be separated. If they were about the same size and always got along very well without too much wrestling, I'd rethink it. Mine eat different foods, so they are "separated" (E eats up on an area where Ry isn't allowed). If they really fought each other over food, they'd be completely separated. Also something have to be careful with chew bones. |
^^I agree. Pee pad training doesn't require anything special when adding a second pup, unless your dog is like Max. He guarded the piddle pad. I put a second one down for awhile for Teddy. My boys had to be supervised eating for about a month because the younger one wanted to eat out of the same bowl, silly boy. When they were alone inside the house, I separated them with a baby gate until Teddy grew up because I was afraid that they would get each other going, running around too fast, wrestling, and no one to slow them down. Now they just sleep or look out the window if they are alone. |
Mine are not pad trained so I can't help you there. I do take them outside together and have never had any issues. As far as feeding, I feed in the same room but separate bowls. Rosie tends to eat Mikki's if I don't keep it separate. They are always together so I guess it justs works. :) |
Def get more pads! I use the washable kind and have about 8 that I rotate thru. If the new pup is a male and is already lifting leg, then it can help to put a filled water of bottle in the middle of the pad as a place to mark. I always separate the new puppy when they're little bc of the potential for size related injuries and playing. I think around 6-10 mths old was when I put them together. |
I have a really big sized pad for my 2. Mine are left loose on the first level of the house but they are 3 and 4. They each have their favorite spots to go to. Sometimes when I leave and they know it, I will find them on the same pillow together as if to hug and hold each other because I am leaving. lol |
My dogs use one pad during the day and I change it in the evening. Mine have to be separated when eating otherwise fights break out and anyway they all eat different diets. |
Oh I am nervous. I might be taking in two fosters so I will have three. :eek: |
Roxy is my 6 month old yorkie and Oreo is my 5 yr old Shih tzu. They get along great but wrestle a bit too much. Roxy stays in her xpen or crate when I'm not home or busy. She has a homemade potty patch in there. Oreo has free roam of the apartment and goes potty outside only. They both eat the same kibble but roxy gets some premade raw so I feed her separately. She nibbles on his food sometimes. |
Thanks for your input. We have never owned more than one at a time and are still in talks about adding more. We're just not sure how different it will be w two, making sure we are prepared. |

I feed mine together and usually don't have problems with them eating each others food. Occasionally, Khloe won't finish her breakfast and Couver helps himself to it. I don't leave food for them when we are gone... so that's not a problem. They say in a large room with their crate that is covered to create a den, pee pads, water, a chair to sleep on and a heated bed and they do great together. I kept Khloe separated from Couver when she was younger (while we were away) to ensure they didn't get too rough and her get hurt. Once I knew that she could hold her own, they were in the room together. I know they really enjoy the company of another pup while we're gone and it makes me happy knowing they are not lonely :) |
I think a lot of the multiple pup issues depend on the temperament of each dog. We feed both Levi and our non-yorkie Dallas at the same time in the same place. Their bowls are next to each other in the kitchen, and they only eat the food we put in their bowl. No food aggression or any problems there. We can't leave both pups out together we're gone because Dallas has severe separation anxiety when there are no humans around. Levi is perfectly fine and just sleeps...Dallas likes to destroy things. :rolleyes: So Levi gets free roam of the master bedroom and attached areas. Dallas is crated in the front bedroom, and acts like an angel while crated...go figure. |
