Puppy or adult I just wanted to hear about everyones experiences with getting a puppy or adult I'm currently searching for my perfect fur baby but I always come back to the same question puppy or adult? Would love to hear the stories (: |
It depends. Are you wanting to get up in the middle of the night, deal with cleaning up accidents, potty training, dealing with nipping, chewing, messing up things like puppies do.... Or would you prefer a dog that is maybe already house-trained, or partially house trained, maybe a bit more mellow, probably past the nipping/chewing stage, etc? Puppies are a joy but they are a LOT of work. I loved doing it with Jackson but I am not sure I am wanting/willing to do it again to be honest. He was a fairly easy puppy and I lucked out... I've seen puppies that were 100x harder than him, LOL. But for a few months at least it was like having a newborn. We were up in the middle of the night, he would wake up early and expect to play, we had a nice little routine though. But I must say when my stepmom and dad adopted their 1 1/2 year old dog, it was a super easy transition. He made himself at home, he was already potty trained, sleeping through the night, it was a breeze. |
I got a young adult. :) Levi is a rescue and was almost 2 years old when I brought him home. It was a pretty easy transition. I had met him several times, so he was familiar with me and I knew what kind of personality I was bringing home. He needed some "brushing up" on his potty skills and basic obedience, but he had those down pat within a few months. Because he was already an adult, I knew what I was getting. I knew what he looked like and how he acted. He is energetic and playful - the exact temperament I wanted in a dog. He loves to go places and play with toys and meet new people. He behaves well when I take him in public or to other people's homes. I think there are many positives about getting an adult - but some people really enjoy the puppy stage, so that is something you will have to consider. |
i definately think it depends on your lifestyle. Puppies are ALOT of work! there are sleepless nights (many) training (of all types) extream energy (trust me when i say Ziggy will keep going and going and going till he plops! even after a RUN around our neighberhood) etc. BUT the upside is puppy smell, extra bonding (Ziggy and Tobby know I'm mommy, i've had them since 8weeks, nursed through neutering-Toby, and 48hr hospitalization and 2weeks nursing him back to health) I think im alittle bias though, i have always gotten puppies :) |
Since Im fostering a poodle and working now again I'm kinda like in the middle I want a puppy but at the same time I want an adult now I don't mind a puppy but I always wanted to get an adult maybe bacause puppies get adopted so fast adults are hard to place it's like half and half |
I agree with the previous posts. Puppies are loads of fun, but they are also a lot of work. Adopting an older dog has a lot of advantages. I brought Max home at 13 weeks and Teddy at 8 months old. Teddy is every bit my baby that Max is. :) |
I agree with everyone. Puppies are a lot of hard work, but adults can be too. It always helps me to take a sheet of paper and make two lists. On one side put Adult/ other side Puppy. If I had to go back to work myself, and was looking for a dog, I probably would choose an adult rehome. |
My first was a very young pup when I got her. It was A LOT of work. It is really like having an infant. They need fed every couple of hours bc of hypoglycemia. They are totally dependent on you. I enjoyed having a little one but am not sure I would want to do it again. I got Gidget at 18 months of age, and it was a lot easier. She still had a lot of puppy in her, playful, but came pad trained and very mannerly. I was worried about her attaching as much as a young pup did, but she is very attached to us. |
I have always got mine as puppies, to watch them grow up. But....I am home all the time. I have all the time in the world to spend with them. I will admit, it is a lot of work. I would think it depends on your lifestyle. |
I got puppies which I was so happy about, however, I got them both at the beginning of the summer (I'm a teacher) so I had all my time off and was able to take care of them. If it was this summer when I was taking grad classes, I wouldn't be able to do it! That being said, I loved raising them from puppies, and seeing them grow and change:) On the OTHER hand, I would love to rescue a dog. We applied to one rescue the October we got Nala and found out 7 months later we were accepted but that was after we decided on Nala. Older dogs are more set in their ways, you might be able to see their personalities a little bit more, and they may be potty trained. Whatever you choose, you'll love him or her so much :D |
