Confused about what to do with my puppy-help! Hi All, I have posted before about Rudy my male yorky who will be 9mths on 9/25 he is not getting better w/ the aggression biting issues I have contacted petsmart to inquire about training with him and I am most likely going to do this not to say it will change him but it is a start For ex the other day I was walking him on the leash with my son with us outside around the block rudy was fine until my son started to jump to touch the tree rudy went crazy trying to bite him he would not walk he kept going at my son i had to carry him home and he barked the whole time trying to bite my child it was quite freaky so i am torn right now as to what to do should i sell him or try the training first another issue is he is not my only dog i have the older yorky 14 yrs and rudy is kept separate b/c of this they dont mix myles doesnt want to be bothered i thought this would get better but not really so i feel bad for rudy he is kept in one room most of the day i just feel like i dont have time for him the time he needs to be walked daily played w/ etc i have 3 kids they started school i am home but looking for work i dont know what to do with him i really do not want to get rid of him but i feel the longer i wait the worse it is gonna be and if i dont get him trained soon it may never improve thanks denise :( |
I'm confused why this 9 month old would be so aggressive if you got him right from a breeder. Was he a rescue? Are you sure your kids or anybody else have always been gentle with him? Petsmart is more for basic obedience and not for behavioral issues. A behaviorist is needed. I know you are stressed over this. I'd say if you don't have the time or money to make this work, then it is best to surrender him to a Yorkie rescue. I wonder if the kids are just too much for him right now. Either he or they are going to get hurt one of these days if this isn't immediately and properly dealt with. I know money was an issue last time. If you have come up with it and can spend the time training, then maybe the American College of Veterinary Behaviorists site would be a good place to start. |
Sounds like a possible prey drive response. Behavioral training is required. |
hi ladies i am stressed over this b/c i got him in the first place thinking my older dog needed a friend but i now see he did not he was fine alone he was from a breeder pure bred yorky and i am a long time yorky owner i have never had problems w/ yorkies being like this so i am a bit taken back by it well he has been w/ my kids in the same room since day one he is kept in the living area where the kids watch tv and he is in there so they are rough at times w him i have a 8, 5 and 4 yr old 2 boys so it is a bit nutty in my house at times but i have told them to be gentle with him this just started about 2mths ago i would say after neutering i feel maybe he needs to run the house more maybe b/c he is confined but than he does this when we are outside like i said walking him so i dont know i will check out the behaviorist site you said i am trying to use a whistle now to blow when he goes to bite them and see how that works any other advice is much appreciated i feel bad to get rid of him but it may be the best thing to do |
As you were advised previously, I would not leave this dog alone with your children. That is step one. This pup may be better off in a home without children. I know that will be a difficult decision, but it sounds like he needs someone with more time and resources to work with him. |
I noticed Chloe getting more aggressive about biting. I couldn't understand why this was happening until i saw how my husband was playing with her. I put a stop to it. I had to retrain her not to bite my husband during play, as I had already taught her not to bite down on me during play. She now does not play aggressive. Children are too rough, they learn to be too aggressive I believe. |
I totally agree with what your saying it definitely has to do w/ my children playin rough w/ him but than he just does this out of the blue even while leashed to others more so my kids and my other yorky i just feel bad letting him go w/ my kids but honestly i dont believe they will mind maybe in the beginning but they will get over it thanks |
..but if they have been rough with him in the past, he does remember that. It could be part of the problem. Yorkies aren't generally a good choice for young children. |
see i never had a problem with my yorky and kids and my oldest is 14 he has been around my oldest son for 8 years i never saw yorkies as aggressive b/c i never had this problem but i never had 3 children around a puppy before so i believe this is part of the reason for his behavior like u said thanks |
