Hair-loss around nose due to itching/allergies We live in Florida and my 3 yo yorkie's allergies seem to be getting worse and worse every year. This summer was especially bad (despite anti-histamines) and her snout paid the biggest price. She has hair loss all around it, and even under her lip on the underside of her snout. While she hasn't been itching as much lately, the hair does not seem to be coming back in. I definitely think her allergies are not food related (we feed Acana Pacifica), but rather due to the environment being that allergens are in the air here in FL almost year round. The vet just tells me to keep her on benadryl year round, which I don't believe in. Any and all advice is appreciated. |
I would start looking to have her seen by a board certified dermatoligist for a second opionion. They might be able to help you figure out more of what is really causing the problem. I know when I thought Taycie was struggling with enviromental allergies, it ended up being food suprisingly. She was experiencing no gastrointestional problems so I never really linked it to her food. Once the switch it was seriously night and day for her, no more itching, hot spots, runny tear stained eyes, and bright red ears! I haven't given her Benadryl since the switch.. That's just my experience with allergies, thus far, you very well could be dealing with enviromental.. For me, I was at the point if the food thing doesn't help then I am seeking a dermotoligist. I hope you find what works for your baby.. it can be so rough.. |

My Quincy suffers from fall allergies. He just goes nuts itching his bottom and than loosing his hair because of it. He looks utterly Ridiculous.... but as soon as winter hits, he's good. Hair grows back in time! Just give it time.... My vet said to try Benadryl Allergy med. up to four times a day. |

She was on Natural Balance LID Sweet Potato and Venison at the time. Her "allergies" symptoms have always been there with other foods we had tried.. I had just resulted to a LID diet because of her sensitive stomach. Now she is on RX Royal Canin Potato and Rabbit. I love it. I can not BELIEVE the improvement!!!!!!! Her eyes are so clear and finally NO more tear stains. They were really starting to get bad... Her ears are not bright red and she has quit the constitant sratching. I have tried MANY foods and this is the first one I have seen such a dramatic improvement with:) |
I know what you're going through, Tila's allergies caused her to rub and itch her face, she too lost hair around her nose. It's grown back though, not all the way in but looks much, much better. |
Was this scratched off or did it just fall out for no reason? It could be allergies, but loss of hair on the nasal planar surface has many possible causes. If it is allergies, the Benadryl may not be doing a great job. Time for a veterinary dermatologist. |
