A good friend of mine has a girl yorkie, she is around 10 years old. Lately she has noticed the dog feels lighter and she can feel her ribs now, and her tummy once was round is now flat. She has all apperances of losing weight but yet she recently took her in to have her weighed and she still weighs the same. She took her in a week later just to confirm and the result was the same. I guess my question is, what would cause this? She had a recent vet exam and is in good health. Is it possible her weight is just shifting with age? Is that even possible? I had absolutely no advice, and thought I would ask here. She said she does not know if she should be concerned or not as this seems very strange....

I have never heard of such a thing. A dog appearing smaller and lighter and to be able to feel ribs now without the dog loosing weight....I don't get it???

Hi there my friends Maltese did the same thing. She is 15 years old and in perfect health. But when she turned 13 you could feel her ribs ect but weighed the same. The only conclusion the vet cam up with was she had lost weight regarding fat but was building more muscle as she was still taking her daily walks. Muscle weights more than fat.

This is what I was going to suggest too, I can't think of anything else except that muscle weighs more than fat, has she been exercising more or more consistently? That would explain it.

I asked her this and she said that no she has not been getting more excersize. I am stumped but I guess as long as she seems healthy and happy I would not think it can be too bad....

I ask My sister to post the question with her docs and nursing students. So that is why I didn't post earlier, because I had no ideas, let alone facts. But here are some of the possible answers. A.Maybe dogs can lose muscle and skin tone and appear to srink just like elderly humans do. B. Muscle weighs more than fat. If muscle mass increases and fat decreaces it is possible for a patient to weigh the same.

If this were me, and this is just my opinion, if one of my furbabies was having this problem, I would be going to a different vet. But I'm just paranoid about my babies and I would be worried until I found out what the problem was.
