If I volunteer at a shelter... If I volunteer at a shelter, will I be endangering my fur baby by possibly bringing home something that he can catch? I want to volunteer really bad, but feel nervous that I could hurt Bailey. Thoughts? |
Some Precautions you can take: The shoes you wear there, can be ONLY for there. Take them off and put them in a plastic zipper bag in the trunk. Many germs are carried into our home and autos, on our shoes. You can Wash your hands after touching the shoes and wipe the bag and zipper pull, with a wet germ wipe. If you clean cages or touch used bowls or hold and handle animals. Wash your hands and arms before going home. Ask the tecs or Vet to explain what you should do to be safe. Many shelters have a volunteer program, and they train you, so you know what to do be safe. Our shelter does not allow Volunteer to touch or clean up areas where sick animals are being treated or holding areas. They only help with healthy, ready to adopt , animals. volunteering I think that is wonderful that you are considering volunteering at a shelter in your area... there are diseases you can transfer to your pets (such as ringworm, and parvo), and diseases you can also get from the animals (such as ringworm and rabies)....a rabies vacination for yourself might be in order...(I've had one) Please discuss these things with the shelter supervisor...also discuss WHO is responsible if you are injured...often these animals have been abused or injured and will strike out in fear to someone who wants to help them.... I agree with the previous post...have shoes just for the shelter and wash them frequently in something that kills PARVO...wash your clothes before touching your pets...and wash your hand frequently... Please also consider that this may be a kill-shelter (our county shelter kills almost everything on Wednesday, sometimes 20-30 animals) Can you deal with the high death rate this shelter may consider a fact of life? Just a thought...I've been doing rescue for most of my life and have also worked for a vet for many years... If you still would like to volunteer, Bless you...we need more like you... roxanne |
Thanks to you both! Now I can call my local shelter armed with some questions. I think giving any amount of time to an animal (even on death row) would be a blessing to them. I can't let my feelings get in the way of their happiness. :) |

Parvo is a threat to puppies and kittens, so be very careful if you have any babies at home. Animals that are fully vaccinated for parvo (I think it's a series of 2 or 3 shots) are protected. |
Thanks! Do they give 7y/o's a parvo shot? Bailey is a chronically sick dog, so I want to be EXTRA careful! Quote:
