smelly tooth
 

Bentley has a smelly tooth. Its a baby tooth I think that wasn't extracted with the rest of them during his neuter a long time ago. It clearly needs to be removed. So I took him to the vet and he agreed. So, I called to make the appt to have it extracted and they quoted me $350. For the extraction and full dental. I honestly see nothing wrong with his teeth except the bad tooth. He has some light plague going on but nothing to be too concerned with right now. He recommended the dental. W/o the dental its only $159. Right now we can afford the extraction as he also just had a titer done. I'm concerned though about him going under again for the full dental in a few months. Should I hold off on having the bad tooth extracted until we have $ for the full dental as well? I brush his teeth every few days and I'm also wondering if they rnt trying to get me to spend more money as they do add things on to my estimate that he doesn't need sometimes. He's only 15 months old. Is a full dental really needed at so young an age? I'm the first to freak out about small things when it comes to Bentley's well being and I simply am not seeing that his teeth are in need of a dental at this point. However I don't want to put him in danger by going under twice. I planned to wait about 4 months to have the full dental. Is it safe to do it that way or to have them at the same time? That one tooth needs to go.

If it is a puppy tooth that has been retain, the chances of it being abscessed are zero..they have almost no root and decay is not that common in young Yorkies...I have never had one with true decay...tartar causes most dental problems...under the tartar is usually a healthy tooth, but the tartar goes beneath the gums and causes infections, abcesses and tooth loss..

I would brush the tooth with baking soda and try to remove the food that is no doubt caught between the two teeth...if you see any inflamation or infection, I would see the vet..if not I would wait for a regular dental..I would not put one of mine under to remove one puppy tooth...I got some great minty, white chewable bones at Petmarts that really helps wih tartar...best wishes

Well, I think its a puppy tooth. But with what you're saying I'm not too sure now. Its rotten and def decaying. It looks terrible. Its black and brown in color. Its a very small tooth and I thought with some bones we could get it to come out as it seems to be a bit loose. That was the vets original reccomendation. No such luck though. The tarter he has on his other teeth is almost no existent. What he does have is mostly in back of course and is light brown in color. There doesn't seem to be a tooth under the bad one. That's how bad it looks. I kno that one needs to come out. I guess what I'm asking is, if I don't see a need for a full dental right now can it wait? When is a first dental typically done? I figured it was around 2 or 3 and then yearly after that.

I am not saying decay is impossible...but dog teeth do not decay as human teeth do...if the tooth is solid, but discolored, I bet it is dead..if it has a hole like a cavity, which I can not ever recall seeing in a Yorkie..then it needs the vet....
I have seen teeth cover in tarter..scrape it off and under is a shiny tooth...no holes or cavity...

Which tooth is it...is it loose at all...you can try wiggling it...like you would a childs baby tooth...might loosen...

we are in san diego too. Gizmo's vet also forgot some baby teeth in during his neuter so 3 weeks ago we had Gizmo go under for a dental and to remove the extra baby teeth. It was about 350$ but thats because the vet needed to do xrays. Gizmo just turned a year old in May so i wanted to get the dental done while he was under. My vet in poway is 200$ for the dental plus maybe another 20$ to pull the baby tooth! if u want their info lemme know!! best of luck!!!!!

I took Bentley to a vet on Miramesa blvd. I just had the tooth pulled. His breath is 100% better now. Im brushing his teeth and they really dont seem bad enough to require a dental. They dont seem bad at all. But I would like to get a dental done soon. Id love their info. I have been in Louisiana for about half a year and now that Im back I cant seem to find a vet I really like so I am still looking. He did great though and the smelly tooth is gone. :)
