Dental?? I would like some input from fellow YTers. My babies are 2 years old and had their annual exam last week. The vet checked them all over and gave them a clean bill of health. I had specifically asked the vet if they need a dental (3 times!! lol :p) as I know that it's crucial to keep their teeth clean. Well, the vet said their teeth look great and that a dental won't be necessary for probably another year. Well, they NEVER had a dental before and they are 2 years old. We have been consistent with brushing and giving them CET chews to help keep the teeth clean. Well, there will be a vet that is giving a group discount for dental in lat October. I was wondering if I should give them a dental then or just wait another year...any suggestions??? For now, I'm still doing the same old stuff to keep their teeth in good shape. ;) Thanks :) |
If I trusted my vet, I would go with his recommendation. I wouldn't think it necessary to put them under sedation until they need it. Congrats on the good work keeping their teeth in great condition!!! |

Carmel's Teeth 3 Attachment(s) Okay so I took pictures...lol Here's Carmel's |
Emma's Teeth 3 Attachment(s) Here's Emma's. She was not too cooperative... Carmel's teeth are bigger and easier to brush. Emma's not cooperative when it's teeth brushing time. The vet said I can wait another year...what do you think?? The reason I'm asking is because there's a good dental deal at the end of October and I was thinking of getting the dental then so I won't have to worry about it for another 2 years? :) |
Wow they look really white and clean for 2 year olds!! I am by no means an expert in dentals, hopefully someone with more experience will come chime in before long. My Bogie is going on 3 and hasn't had to have a dental yet, Jada is almost 5 and had one right after we adopted her and she was 2.5 years old. Her teeth had horrible tartar. |
Jackson's teeth look like Emma's! He's got those green stains on his teeth, so odd?? I'm glad to see your pups have it too, lol. Jackson's are basically white except for that staining on his canine teeth but he does have a bit of brown too. He will be 3 in October and I don't think they are TOO bad but I may like to get them cleaned later this year. |
I would "not" do an anesthesia free cleaning (almost purely cosmetic according to the ACVD with some possible complications). I would wait until my dogs' vet felt it was time. |

Their teeth look very much like my Jax's, who is soon to be 1 year old. He absolutely won't let me brush his teeth, although I've been trying since he was a small puppy. I just give him dental chews a lot and hope that will help. He has that same yellowish staining on the big molar tooth, in the crevices of it. I think dental chews must not be be able to reach in there to clean it out. I don't know much about non-anesthetic dentals. Are those the kind they do with a laser? If it's safe I guess you could get it done as often as you want and can afford. But I would avoid anesthesia as much as possible. |
Callie is 4 years old and never had a dental between my brushing and her bone chewing they look amazing little to no tarter. I would never get a dental done on her just because people say a yorkie should get one every year. If my vet thought she needed one I would go with it but I am trying to hold that off as long as possible by brushing and giving bones. If your vet says your dogs teeth are good I think you should be happy about it and keep doing what your doing. |
My boys are 6 years old now. I talked to my vet at their annual visit last year about dentals and she told me their teeth don't need them yet. They were 5 years old, she told me maybe 2 years from now. They only eat hard food and hard treats so I guess that has kept their teeth cleaner. Im glad about that but I'm thinking by next spring/summer they will both go in for a full dental. They will be almost 7 years old at that point and it will be their first dental. That was recommended by my vet, not lack of care on my part, trust me! :) |
2 Attachment(s) Actually, I just checked out Jackson's teeth again and they don't seem too bad. It's hard to tell in pictures but he does have some staining on the four canines (he also has an over-bite) but most of his teeth are all white still. :) So a vet may say he doesn't even need one yet this year. I'm glad his teeth are still pretty good because to be honest, I don't do as much as I should with them. I think if I started brushing every day (I do it about once a week now), they would REALLY look good. I do use Petzlife every time he gets a bath and also sprinkle some PlaqueOff onto his food. |
Thanks everyone for your input!!! Wow, I didn't know non-anesthetic dental is bad. Good to know!! I will definitely keep up with the teeth brushing!! I brush every night and they HATE me for it :D:rolleyes: Hopefully we won't need dental until they are 7 years old :D Wow!! |
