Yorkie Agility?? Sorry if this is in the wrong section, I didn't know what section to put it in.I want to do Yorkie Agility with my Yorkie's. They are 12 week old litter mates. How early should i start? How should i start training? How old should they be before they go to shows? Can they be neutered? Please answer these questions or give me any other information i need to know. I looooveee agility. :) I've only taken one class but hope to take more. I practice a bit here and there at home with some cheap equipment. To do "real" agility -- it's really best to wait until one year of age to ensure joints and growth plates are in place. Actually most agility courses require them to be one year of age. But you can do little things at home like tunnels and putting really low jumps, etc. Good luck, it's really a blast and a great bonding experience. Alaskayorkie also does a lot of agility with his pup, Eddie. |
Our agility trainer required one year of age. We started with her puppy classes. We did agility with our Westie for two years and it was so fun!! The class before ours ~ had the cutest little yorkie and I could see her just be-boppin around all the other dogs - so cute! I'm sure they had to lower the jumps a LOT but she sure looked like she was having the best time. |
Harley and I are also agility competitors. They require 18 months in some places to compete, and a year old before they can jump. The reason for this is because their growth plates in their bones can be damaged if allowed to jump too early. That being said you definitely should start training immediately on ground work. It's never to early to do some of the basics. If you have any questions at all at any time PM me... First you want to sign up for puppy classes, good socialization (after shots like said above) is a necessity, make sure that he learns how to play well with other dogs. Then your top priority should be the "come" command as a puppy, a recall is super important cause the dogs are "naked" when it comes time to compete so there is no way to catch them. Spend lots of time looking for a coach that matches you, and once your pup is old enough to start using equipment I have lots of tips on how to make cheap stuff for a small dog, just made a tunnel, miniature training dog walk, and jumps at home for virtually no cost (ahhh the beauty of small dogs). Believe it or not, Target used to carry a very cool agility set with a small tunnel, weave poles, and a small jump. It was a very reasonable price too. |
