Renaming question My normal posture on naming is to keep options open and get to know my dog until a name pops up. Typically it's within a week. However, even with our past rescue dogs (and cats) they have been pretty fast adoptions (same day most times) while Ferg's was almost a month in the works. Of course, looking at her on PetFinder almost daily and talking about her with the wife and kids, we kind of got used to her "shelter name" Fergie. I'm wondering as she is an older dog than we thought (around 4) and has been called Fergie by her shelter foster for at least four to five months, how hard would it be to rename her and have her come to recognize it as "her name"? I'm also wondering if I can rename her (I don't know...just seems to make her "more" mine if that makes sense) since we used her shelter name for a month during the adoption process. Was wondering what your thoughts were. Should I just stick with her shelter name? |
It took me hours to name Callie I was on the floor with her trying to figure out the best name for her as a kid I was like that with my stuffed animals too and really anything thing that needed a name. Does she come and respond to Fergie? I think if she comes and responds to Fergie you might want to just keep that name. |
^^I agree, if she is responding well to Fergie and clearly recognizes her name, I would keep it. Names can be changed. My younger boy came to us from our breeder at 8 months and I changed his name. He responded immediately to Teddy, so I knew it was a winner. |
We just got our new rescue about 2 weeks ago, they weren't really sure what his name was, he was called Dickie, Peppi, Monty......I already had a name picked out for him, Dexter. We just use it repeatedly everyday, he seems to know his new name!:D |
We spell our baby's name a little differently....I prefer to call it the "dog" version...fur...like dog fur... furgie....I think its a great name to keep for your newest addition! congrats! |
All of the one's that I have adopted I actually kept their names as they knew it and I thought it was cute. I just added a middle name to it. Now one exception was Allie, she was an owner turn in and her name was Alex, I really didn't like it for a girl name so I started calling her Allie and she answers to it. |
I don't think it's a problem. Dogs are so adaptable and a name to them isn't anymore than a recognizable word, such as 'treat' or something. It's just a word that they have associated with them getting attention, etc. My dad got his dog from the shelter and he had three different names before us, poor dude, he was only a little over a year old. We finally settled on Buddy because he's responded to it the best. But his previous names were Michael, Ashton, and Duke. |
I went through this same decision when I got Mikki. She was used to being called Mikki and she did respond to the name. My DH and I decided not to rename her. She was already having to make so many adjustments. So, we just changed the spelling of her name at the advice of a YT member! :D That way she still had the name but we had our own unique way of spelling it. |
if you keep repeating their new name often, they will adapt to it and forget the old name. I did this will my jack russell....just keep saying it over and over like a broken record..LOL |
