Over weight just a question about weight has anyone ever been told their baby needs to loose weight? my vet told me today that momo was over weight hes only 13# i dont see anything wrong with it. He gets walked twice a day he even walks with my mother 5 miles every other day. he gets out there but i just think that he is not meant to be small. my baby in my eyes is perfect! should i ignore this advice on him loosing weight or should i really do something that will help him loose weight? |
If he has a weight problem, you should take it seriously. It's not a vanity thing - pets can be cute when they are chubby. Unfortunately it's very bad for their health. It's not good for humans either, but especially given that dogs have a shorter life span than ours, it's important that we help them live as long as possible. Take a look at him from above. You should be able to see a slight indentation in between his ribcage and his hips. You should also be able to feel his ribs if you exert slight pressure on his side. It sounds like he gets a good amount of exercise, so maybe you just need to tweak his diet a bit. Does he ever get to run around off leash? |
oh yes all the time we have a gated fence and when he walks with my mother he is off leash we live in the country so she walks in the fields and when im at familys house i take him for walks with my nieces and nephews i can feel and see his rib cage and he is on science diet i dont know what im doing wrong |
Do you want to post a couple pictures of him from above? Maybe other posters can give their perspective on his weight. Science Diet is not the greatest food in the world, but it's not the worst either. Maybe he's just getting a bit too much of it? |
Did you vet mention what he would expect your little guy to weigh at an ideal weight? Many times its not the food that is causing a weight issue but the amount of treats that you are feeding. Could you please give a little more information regarding amount of food you are feeding daily, ideal weight and amount of treats. All three of my pups are larger and their idea weight is around 11 lbs. They eat about 1/4 c. per meal and I do not free feed and keep treats to a minimum. It might only take you cutting out treats and giving slightly less food per meal to achieve the weight your vet is suggesting. |
i agree to look at him from above! |
You should follow your vets advice if he thinks he is overweight then he needs to be put on a diet |
Overweight dogs are a pet peeve of mine! (My fiance's two dogs are living with his parents atmand are getting very obese) I have a measuring cup and measure out exactly how much my dogs eat. My shih tzu is 12lbs and my vet said he's perfect for his size. He's usually too fluffy to judge by sight, but I can feel his ribs and I can see he's in shape when I bathe him. I've read that most people think that a slightly overweight is actually an ideal weight when looking at them because we are so used to seeing obese dogs. If your vet says that Momo needs to lose weight, then I would follow his suggestions. Btw Oliver gets 1/4 cup Science Diet Ideal balance 2xs a day. I give baby carrots as a treat once a day and a few kibbles of dry food as training treats. He is very active playing with my other dogs, chasing the cats, running laps in our back yard, and playing fetch in the house. I also walk him a mile a day when its not too hot or too cold (he can't take extreme weather with his stubby shih tzu face) |
Do you feel the ribs on your yorkie when he stands :) ? You should not have a problem with feeling them but you should not see them easily (should not stand out) , if you have no problem with feeling the ribs then he's fine :) If you don't feel the ribs easily then he's too fat ! then you have to put him on food with less fat, less calories and more protein, and also keep exercising him well. You should see a waist on the dog :) If he doesn't have any waist then he's too fat. |
I think it's hard to judge just by weight alone. Both Rhett and Scarlett weigh the same (13 pounds!) The same vet says that Rhett's weight is just fine, but Scarlett needs to lose a bit based on the rest of their build. Rhett definitely has the muscle man look while Scarlett is "curvier", LOL. They both get 1/4 cup of BB twice a day along with a couple of carrots. Scarlett gulps hers down and searches for more. We need to work on the exercise, but it's been too darned hot around here to walk more than a short distance. |
i dont think the vet is going by your baby's weight alone.. maybe more of how the weight looks on him. i think you should take their advice, im sure he has your baby's best interests at heart |
He gets walked a lot during the day I think I'm going to wath how much he eats I know this might my me sound bad but I have a dog bowl that puts more food in the bowl when it goes empty lol so he can eat as much as he wants I can feel his ribs but when I actually look for them he smalls in height |
You know, it's possible your vet is wrong. I would say probably not, because a lot of people don't realize their pets are overweight. But perhaps your guy has a stocky build. Did the vet say what he based his assessment on? Some dogs can manage their weight with free feeding, and some can't. BTW, the technical term for the condition you describe is "porky yorkie". :D |
