What's a good skin conditioner for yorkies? Princess is being treated for fleas with Frontline & has also had 2 dawn baths. Her major itching is down but the vet said now her skin is dry most likely from the baths. I've been using her regular cond. at bath time (Oster) but it's not doing the trick. The vet said to get a good oatmeal based shampoo/conditioner but the last couple I've tried-in the past-made her itch even more so I think the oatmeal might bother her, too. What do you recommend for a really soothing conditioner? It's primarily for her skin, her coat is still very silky. I just want to make her comfortable like she used to be.:) |
A healthy skin and coat come from the "inside out". It's what you feed. Dogs who eat just dog food generally have dry skin. You need to add either Omega 3 gel caps or flax oil gel caps. A good marbled roast is very good for their skin and coat too. Cook the roast in either a pressure cooker or a slow cooker. Save the broth to cook some pearled barley and brown rice to add to a little meat. |

Coconut oil is really good for dry skin!!!! I get mine at GNC is natural coconut oil. here is a link of a thread about the benefits of the coconut oil, n ur dog doesn't have to eat it, just by rubbing it on the skin it moistures it. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...conut-oil.html Good luck.:animal-pa |
I was just gonna say coconut oil as well! I got the Tropical Traditions kind. Uni loves to eat it and also when I massage it in her skin. She is most itchy on her shoulders. When I put her on my lap and open up the container she sits so still and good for me. It's like I can hear her say ahhhhhhh!!! |
:D:bravo: I use coconut oil for my babys as well, tropical tradition virgin oil. If you give your furkid a good oiling let it sit on coat for 10 minutes this shampoo you will notice a huge difference almost immediately!! Good luck. |
I'd use regular oatmeal on her skin. Personally, I think Princess should only eat her Rx food per her vet. You can make your own oatmeal shampoo 1 cup oatmeal ground, 1 cup baking soda, 1 quart warm water -- apply to skin and leave on for 5-10 mins, then follow with a 50% water and 50% white distilled vinegar rinse. |
Isle of Dog has a primrose oil spray.... I think it may be good, too. |
I bet there is a good medicated shampoo to help with this. If she is on I/D, then that is all she should get orally. Any fat of any type would be an unnecessary risk. There is plenty of fat in her food for her to survive on. |
