Successful compatibility with 2 male dogs? I've been researching the idea of getting another puppy. I have a male and would prefer getting another male. (Both neutered of course.) One source I read said they would fight a lot especially if they are terriers. My dog Copper loves being with other little dogs and so far I've only seen play behavior. What are the chances of having 2 compatible male dogs? Do you leave them home alone together, when the puppy is a little bigger? |

I have 2 male dogs (not yorkies) who are best friends. I had Ziggy (80lb Australian Shep mix) first and when he was 1 1/2 years old we added Oliver (12 lb shih tzu). They play together constently and have never, ever fought. I added Belle (5lb yorkie) to the family in Feb and she is the one who starts fights with Ollie - so I think that it's the individual dog's personality more than the gender. Each dog does have it's own personality & that has to be taken into account - as a general rule 2 males get along great. Neutering is a must but most boys will accept a male playmate without any issues. You have to be the "pack leader" of course but they will both look to you for guidance. (females are a little more likely to fuss with another female but get along better with males. IMO - 2 males are the best together). After the puppy is an adult, totally housetrained, and gets along well with your other male it's possible to let them have run of the house together. However, do not leave them alone until you make absolutely sure they are ok together. I put all my dogs in crates when I leave - I just don't want them to escape in an emergency, get hurt falling off a couch or getting mad at each other and fighting (I have girls running together). I also don't let them wear collars in the house - too much risk of them getting a mouth or foot hung up in the other's collar. Teresa |
My boys Calvin and Hobbes are brothers also from different litters and they get along great. Sometimes Calvin is intimidated by Hobbes because he is 14 lbs and Calvin is 10 lbs. Both are neutered. I also have 2 spayed females. |
There are 4 male dogs in my house ranging in age from 15yrs to 6 yrs,all neutared. The males all seem to be very patient with Mina (female,yorkie,7month),it is my other female Taffy (10yrs,pom) that is snitty to Mina. She is older and just a bit B!T@H!E. But the boys are all very sweet and tollerant of the puppy being a puppy. |

I had 2 males and they were the best of friends, completely inseperable. In fact when my last boy passed away In January, I put his ashes in with my other little boy (seperate bags of course, but same urn) I figured they would have wanted it that way since they were so close when they were alive. Also it gave me great comfort to know they were together once again. |
