Pulling on her leash How do I get here to stop this. After we have walked for a while she will quite down and walk right. I have stoped her for a minute or so and saying NO but she won't stop until she wants too |
I had the same problem with Zoey when she was little. First, use a harness - NO COLLAR. When they begin to pull you turn sharply and start walking the opposite direction - continue turning every time they begin to pull. You will give them a little jerk as you turn but they get the idea. This was shown to me by a dog trainer. It finally worked. Cherie |

It really is important that you start off the walks correctly. In other words, YOU go out the door first. Literally put yourself in front of the dog at the door, so she knows she needs to follow you. If she jumps out front, go back in and do it again. Keep doing this until she figures out what is the right thing to do. Also, don't jerk the dog around on leash. Simply lead in a calm, assertive manner, and don't feel the need to constantly look to see what SHE is doing or where she is. As leader, she needs to be looking at YOU to figure out where SHE needs to be. |
Also, don't jerk the dog around on leash. Agreed. But when you turn abruptly it does jerk them a little bit because they are going a different direction and now they are being turned around where you are walking. |

Thanks for asking this! I had read many times where you need to walk the dog, not let the dog walk you and I was wondering what to do in this type of situation. This forum is the best! So handy and helpful! |
Great information! :) Thanks. |
Another training method is to make the dog follow you in crazy patterns. This is a variation of the simpler stopping and reversing direction. Do zigzags and figure-eights, reversing direction. The idea is to keep the pup guessing and completely focused on you to see what your next move is going to be. |

Ozzy and I go on fantastic walks. He stays beside me and looks at me every minute or so as if to say "I'm doing alright hey??!!" and I tell him he's a good boy every few minutes. If he starts to pull, we come to a full stop until he sits down, then we start up again. No stress, no yanking, no yelling. |
Ruger used to pull really bad. I started using the "close" command, and now when we come to the corner I use a "wait" command. He'll "kinda" wait until I give him the go ahead, but it works pretty well. I tried one of those no pull harnesses but he ate it. They do look like a good idea. Seems to turn the dog around if he pulls. |
