Going Puppy Crazy @*$%$##!@%$ My new puppy is around 12 weeks old, I love him soooooo much,but he is drving me crazy cause he is always biting your toes & feet (OUCH).Then you go to pet him...he's biting your hands. Patience Patience Patience. I wish he would just relax alittle so I could snuggle with him. |
that is so funny that you say that because when we first got ahia i thought we had made a mistake in getting a puppy instead of an older one. i thought i was too old to have to go thru this puppy stage. she was wearing me out. but she has calmed down a lot since then. she is still playful and trying to take my socks off my feet as i go down the stairs but i no longer have to drag her with every step i take. :D |

I'm right there with ya! Max is 4 months, and still going strong with the chomping. LOL My 3 yr old daughter drags him around with every step she takes, too. We're working with "sit" & "down", and trying to divert his attention with a chew toy...but when he's ready to chomp, there's just no stopping him! LOL BUT, I am happy to report we are having some success because he has been quite cuddly this week, so there's hope in sight that my sweet little love dumplin' will be back once the teething is over. :) |
omg same here.. and iono how to stop it. I heard it grows into a habit later and no matter how many times i tell him "no", he doens't listen. :T |
I have heard that when they start getting ruff like that that you are suppose to tell them "No" and stop playing with them. That it can lead to dominance issue and or aggression later. I tend to believe it because my male maltese did the same thing and I allowed him to do it. He does have some aggressive tendencies. In hindsight I recollect "warnig signs" of potential behaviour problems and probably could have nipped some of his issues in the bud. I would definatley handled things differently had I understood what it could have lead to. |
FIRST...buy some house-shoes...... Second...yes, he will get better....Lil Bit is now 4 months old and is just beginning to lay off the chomping....but still occ does it. (she attacked my brothers toes..he was wearing sandals...he said "why does she keep biting my feet?" I replied "that is all she can reach...lol...lol".) I have occ thumped her nose when she bites down too hard...firmly said "NO BITING"...I know others yelp loudly and turn away...that is what the puppys' littermaters would do. They have to learn 'bite inhibition'....they will continue to 'mouth' on you when playing, but not 'bite' too hard. But you must be firm and consistent......and try playing in the floor with him. I mean like WEAR HIM OUT!!!!!!! My favorite saying now is "A tired puppy is a good puppy"!!!!! |
I would definately start putting an end to the biting. It takes the fun out of playing, doesn't it? I've heard a good way to discipline is to use a squirt bottle and say "no biting" or whatever the problem is. Also, and I have used this method before, use an empty paper towel roll or with a yorkie, a toilet paper roll may be sufficient and pop them. It doesn't hurt, the noise just scares them a little. A small rolled up newspaper or magazine will work, too. Soon, probably all you will have to do is show it to your puppy and it will stop :) Hope this helps. |
I agree with wearing the puppy out. Whenever Sophie just won't let up I get one of her toys and we play "tug" and I make sure she has to really go all out to get it. Then, sometimes I will force her to sit still and even put her under my blanket on my lap so she will calm down a little. Last night it was so funny....I played with her and she still didn't wear out so let her play in her gated play area next to me while I watched t.v. She played SO much and it was hilarious watching her attack her toys. Then, she started barking at me because she wanted me again. So, I took her in my lap, but all she wanted to do was play. I forced her to sit still and it didn't take too long for her to calm down. She was really worn out by then. Then, she looked at me and was blinking like she just couldn't keep her eyes open any longer and she was sound asleep before I had her in my lap even 3 minutes!! Wear that puppy out and you will have a cuddler in no time! |
Biting I broke both my boys of biting along with some other bad habits, by keeping a rolled up small newspaper or magazine handy, kept a rubber band around it to keep it rolled up. When they would bite, or do something I did not want them to do, I would hit the paper either against the palm of my hand or the wall, or whatever was handy and say NO very firmly and then NO Biting! or whatever they were doing. It took a couple of weeks, but they stopped, also to divert them you can take one of their toys, like a tug rope, smear a little pnut butter on it and give it to them to chew on. |
