Is there such thing as a "flea shot"? They wont take the pill. Hi. Im having flea pill troubles. Ive spent 46 dollars in three days on two rounds of the Comfortis pill for my dogs. We tried a second time tonight, had decent luck w the yorkie. But he threw up so, I dont know if it stayed in his system long enough this time for it to work. I have a Lhasa Apso too and she is horribly stubborn and hard to deal with, though terribly cute.lol We've tried smearing p nut butter on it, they eat it and leave the pill, same thing w cheese. We even have tried putting down her throat manually but she gets soo worked up and caughs it back up. I even tried crushing it in wet dog food. She still wont take it. The yorkie finally ate 95 percent of it but later threw up, so dont know if got into his system long enough. I dont know what else to try. This was our secon round of thrying the pills in three days. Spent $46 already, i hate to buy more. Is there a great working flea shot that the vet could give? I dont know of any,was wondering if anybody else did? |
How about one of the flea meds that is applied on the back? I use frontline. |
I have a Yorkie who is hard to pill also, we use Comfortis and how I get her to take it is I use the Greenie Pill Pockets. I cut the Comfortis in half and wrap the two halves in the pill pocket (broken into pieces also). I just start feeding her treats usually start with a piece without the pill and power feed them into her. Works everytime for me now!! Peanut Butter never worked for me, she would eat the peanut butter and spit the pill out. Good luck |
Advantage II. Apply between shoulder blades. Works great. |
Do the topical stuff really work? I always was afraid they might not be as effective. You hear stories where it burns and hurts some pets.. Also the Yorkie sleeps w us, the topical stuff my be too greasy. The Lhasa shes more independent and she wont sleep w us and wants her own bed in the floor also she is so short and squabby she cant jump up on the couches like the yorkie, so she would fare better w the topical treatments but I always doubted their safety and effectiveness. Do u guys recomend one over the other? Also , do they kill them if they already have fleas or is it more of a repellant? These are my first house dogs , so Im still new w some of this stuff. Also do u guys treat tear round or the spring- summer months? I can use all advice on flea prevention. I dont think we've yet to have probs w them in our home. Saddly, our dogs dont get out for walks much but I think they get em at the groomers or vet. And I think they just get a few when they get em. I wash their bedding and treat them when I realize it. We have wood laminate not carpet, so im not sure what other precautions to take to prevent a flea prob in the home. I just want to be prepared and take propper ways to prevent that, I read those things multiply like crazy. Im soo paranoid now. lol |
I have only ever used frontline top spot, never had a single problem with it, never had a flea. Both of my yorkies sleep with me, no issues with greasiness. |
Advantage is the most effective flea med I have ever used. Fleas are dead within a few hours and it keeps working for a month unless there is a big flea population in the house. In that case you would need to use other methods of getting them out of the house as well. Foster and Smith online store is having a sale through August. |
My little one threw up the Comfortus. The others took it okay but I don't think I will ever use it again. Advantage has worked for us but it is amazing we have not had that much trouble with fleas this summer. I guess its even too hot for them too. |
I use Advantix on both of my girls. No problems at all with fleas. Don't have any issues with greasy and both sleep with us too. |

I'd ditch the Comfortis. It's not a great drug in a lot of cases anyway. Spot on product is fine as long as it's one that vets sell (Advantage, Frontline). Some are losing effectiveness. All you can do is try. If there is a flea issue presently, make sure to use a growth regular with the adulticide (Frontline Plus and not just Frontline or Advantage II instead of just Advanage, or Advantage and Program (but Program is a pill)). Some people have success with just the adulticides and others don't. I would get the pilling situation under control though because there will be a day that your pups will have to have pills (maybe even daily). Can you give it the same way you give heartworm pills? |
We use Frontline, and we apply it year round. |

But i dont treat them for it and never have. Unless the vet gave it to them at their check ups when they got their shots. Is this something i need to be doing? They are rarely outside and seems like i was told once wormer wasnt needed as often if they are not outside much in icky places to be exposed to more parasites and things. |
