Twlight attack  Last evening about twilight, I was walking Gracie and Abba. We have often talked about walking safety here on YT. I had the usual poop bags, walking stick, pepper spray, and cell phone. I clip leashes to the carry bag strap. We were walking on the paved hiking path which is at least 10 feet away from the lake. It is nicely shaded by old oak trees. My neighbor Bob has two young daughters age 9 and 11. The girls often tag along on walks Their father was standing in the yard and gave them the yes nod. So our little entourage were walking along chatting. "Miz T LOOK !" Bethie said pointing. I looked and a large owl was just beginning to swoop down. It was coming right at us, like a flying bomber on a target. All three of us screamed and I bent over and grabbed Abba up. He weighs about 3 lbs. Clair the older girl snatched Gracie up. I dropped my walking stick with a clatter. Bob came on the run when her heard our frightened screams. He picked up my walking stick and waved it at the disappointed and retreating owl. "Get going, No rabbits here, go on !" the owl flew up and perched in a near by oak tree and blinked at us. My heart was beating like it wanted out of my chest and my mouth was so dry I could hardly thank them. Needless to say but, that abruptly ended our walk. Bob handed me my walking stick and took both dogs in his big arms and said "I'll walk you home." I walked home on rubber legs and didn't feel safe until he handed me both dogs at my door. I thanked them again. I closed the door and realized that neither dog had uttered a bark or whine. I guess they were scared quiet. I looked around, all 5 dogs were pressed against me on the sofa. It was weird not one of them wanted to leave me and play. I felt tears fill my eyes I could have lost one of them ! Thank God we were all safe now. Like a collective sigh we all began to return to normal.:aimeeyork |
Oh no! Thank goodness you are all safe! That is really scary. I'm always freaked out when I'm out with Dolce and see a big hawk or something. They realized you were freaked out and they were probably a lil freaked out too, so they came and cuddled with you on the sofa. We have to have really good reflexes/quick reactions when out with our little ones. Its kind of like a skill set you have to acquire when owning a small dog. Good thing you were with those girls too so they could pick up one dog and you the other. Wow...im just really glad you all are ok. |
I know someone who lost two small dogs in the country years and years ago to an owl. I don't remember them saying how small, but they wouldn't have been as small as a yorkie. |
Oh my gosh! I would still be freaking out! How scary for you!!!! So glad it ended up being ok. |
Thank god you're all safe!! Sounds like you have a great neighbor there!! |
I hate that. Leave our babies alone. So happy you all are safe. |
I am so glad you and your babies are ok. |
Oh my goodness... So glad things turned out okay and you were able to protect your little ones. |
Glad you and the babies and girls are safe! |
That's the very reason I would never let my girls outside alone. There are birds of prey everywhere, and it doesn't have to be at night that an owl is on the prowl. I'm glad you reacted to quickly, and had some help. So sad though that things like this make us very uneasy taking our dogs on walks. |
Oh, my...I know is must have scared you to pieces. The blessing is...you are all ok, hold onto that one blessed thought. So glad, you are all ok...what a scare. |
I am so glad you and the babies are ok... I would have been so scared |
First off, happy to hear you and your little ones are well and safe. I worry about things like that happening, Winston is never alone outside, but still I wonder what if... |
Owls hunt in the early evening as well as early mornings. Of course they hunt all night but we don't think of them hunting when the sun is out. I live in a wooded area and have seen huge owls when I was leaving for work early in the morning. It is light enough to see them but it seems so strange to see one. They make no noise when flying despite their size. I won't walk Gracie too far from home early in the morning and I always make sure her evening walk is well before dusk. The last owl I saw was a least 3 feet tall from head to tail. They are huge and not afraid of humans either. Glad you had helpers. Take no chances. |
oohhh thats terrible!!! :( I had an encounter with a hawk that targetted my dogs in our yard and we had to hustle them inside while it was swooping down!!!! I hear you! Its so upsetting to think that something wanted to get your baby and take it away! :( I am glad you are all ok! |
