Any recommendations on how to stop the ripping of the wee wee pads??..lol Hey all! I love my babies but potty training has been quite an adventure. Anyhow, if i leave them full roam of the family room they won't rip the wee wee pads yet they also have accidents. Since I have three small breeds, I can't tell who the culprit is. So I decided to corral them in a smaller space with a wee wee pad when no one is able to watch them. It is when they're in this area that they rip up the pad...lol. They have toys, their crates and beds as well as water... Yet, the wee pad seems like their target. Any advice? Oh and I tried taping it to the floor and ended up with "mummified" pups instead....lol. |
Ha ha! Mine do the same thing! I have watched them and they use the pads as a wrestling mat :) Sorry, I don't know how to get them to stop, I just straighten it out as I walk past. Good luck! |
Buy washable pee pads. They're cheaper in the long run and they can't rip them up. |
Washable pads may be a great alternative for the pups. Will save you from cleaning up all the fluff. |
My Chloe does the same thing. The only fear I have of the washable ones, I've heard many stories that some dogs will confuse them with throw rugs and then you have an issue of accidents on every throw rug in the house. My best friend who has a yorkie has this problem because of using the washable pads. |
Personally, I put the washable pee pad on a puppy pad holder...and I think that helps them differentiate between other rugs in the house...since it's elevated in comparison to other things. That's just my experience though. |
I buy my pads at Walmart and they come with a large plastic frame that you put them in. When Gracie was a puppy I just bought the pads but of course she thought it was great fun to drag them around and she would try to rip them apart. I went back to the store and got 2 frames that are made for the pads to go in. She never bothered with playing with them after they were in the frames. She was always attracted to them to pee and poo on. I never had much of a problem breaking her but I never let her wander freely through the home unattended until I was confident she was fully trained. |
Spray bitter apple on the pad. But some dogs like the taste of that! My Hailey is one! Or buy a tray holder to hold all the corners of the pad |
Have you tried putting the pads in a pad holder? |

And yes they have used my throw rugs for potty pads too. I think most of that is my little Queen who thinks she can if she wants to. Most of the time she will use the potty pad though. |
Hey all! Sorry for the late reply. I tried the holder but they started sleeping in it...lol. I've wanted to try the washable ones but was afraid of they would confuse it with a rug. Now the holder I used wasn't a frame, it kind of looked like a bed. I'm going to try that and if not, the washable ones. I'll let you know :-) |
The holder frames did work for us. Jamie ripped the wee wee pads up until we started putting them in frames. Good luck. |
i have a large tray for mine I got on ebay that holds down the potty pads. I bought a larger and smaller tray and found all the small dogs that are here like the larger pad space. It holds them down well since it has that top edge that goes over and a few places on the tray where you push it and the rubber grips also help keep it in place |
Scoobers ripped disposabl pads then pottied on the shreds! Definitely try the washable pads; just put them in the same place every time and use the same pads, it's repetition that creates the pad training (like everything else). Trust me they'll know and won't potty on your rug, but personally I hung the bath rug on the towel hanger just because. |
This is why with 4 Yorkies I started using the washable pads, it always looked like it snowed in my sunroom. |

I would most definitely give the washable pee pads a try. I was a bit skeptical, but the breeder I got Toby from put one in his puppy package and I loved it. I was impressed at how much less stinky they are! I know people sell cute ones on here, and alot of people buy hospital bed pads that work quite well. I personally use the hospital bed pads and LOVE them! |
The reason I bought the paper pee pads to begin with was because they are scented with a hormone that makes the puppy think of going pee. Gracie used them from the first she saw them. The frame holds them tight. Gracie is quite a clean dog and won't step on a pad that she has already used twice. I have noticed that when I walk her where other dogs have been she will start peeing right away. Something about that scent. I think that is why once you get that scent in carpeting they tend to keep going on the carpet. They smell that scent and go on it. I guess you can buy a housebreaking aid that you can put on a cloth or hospital pee pads. It will help attract a puppy to the right place to go. |
