Kidney Stones? Has anyone had experience with their Yorkie having kidney stones? Wall-e had drops of blood in his urine last night, so he went to the vet's today. They ran some tests and just called us back to bring him in for Xrays because they believe he has a kidney stone(s). I've had them and it's horrible and painful, so i'm wondering what they'd do for a 5lb yorkie! Thanks |

When he pee's does it seem to hurt him to pee? Have you noticed? Thats how we noticed something wrong with Mandie. |
He was and is acting completely normal. I noticed the blood on his pee pads. He hasn't been having difficulty urinating so far, so I hope it stays like that. The vet ran the tests and took an xray - it shows that there is just "powder" in his kidneys, so they haven't formed into stones yet . He's now on prescription dog food for the next month. We gave it to him mixed in with his usual kibble and he wasn't thrilled about it, but ate it after much coaxing. |
Thats good that there are not any kidney stones! My vet has Mandie on the prescription Urinary diet as well. She said she probably wouldn't like it because of the smell. (It smells really bad !!) So we started mixing it with the wet kind to make it easier for her to eat. |

I would take a guess that they only have them mixing it for a few days so that there are no gastro-intestinal problems. At least that was the reason for us. But there could be other reasons... Our vet told us to mix the old food with the new for about 3 days, so that she wouldn't get an upset stomach from the drastic change to the new stuff. |
My foster had stones. they were really huge. Four of them. She needed surgery bc they were so big, no way that anything would be able to dissolve them. They were about the size of marbles. After this episode is cleared, you should have him checked annually for uti and crystals. |

OP your dog must be on the prescription food only. Do not mix it with anything else! |
Also, are we talking about bladder stones or kidney stones here? |
Yes, we were just mixing it with his regular food for a few days to transition him, per the vet. He's been on full Rx food for a couple days now, and he eats it no problem. It is kidney stones, but luckily caught it early enough where it is not in stone form yet, so he'll be on the food for a month and get checked again. The blood is no longer in his urine, and he's been a happy boy all weekend! Thanks for all your help and concern! |
If they are not stones yet, then how did they see them in the kidneys? Sounds to me like he had crystals in his urine which is entirely different. I do hope the diet works! :) Keep us posted. |
Ohhh he had xrays....but I dont know that they show crystals in kidneys. Maybe so. |
The vet could see the crystals (he called it "powder") in the x-rays. He took the xray after doing a urine test. I couldn't tell what it was but he explained that it was still powder in the kidneys, and not formed into stones yet, so we could treat it with just the special food. |
Hope it goes well! :) Will look for an update. |
