Any experience with Carlson gates? After reading about how Yorkies and Silkys are quick to take off out the door after squirrels (etc) I think I need to get a gate to close off the living room area from the front door. The back door I'm not worried about as the yard is fenced and the dogs we currently have are trained to scratch at the door to go potty. I found this one: Carlson Extra Wide Gate with Pet Door - Walmart.com I like the width as I have a larger entrance way from the foyer into the living room. I also like the smaller door that we can keep open when we are not using the front door to allow cats through although I'm thinking my new silky and my terrier can get through that too. |
I had a problem with a tiny pup getting through that one. I took it back. I ended up purchasing a wide Dream Baby gate and love it! :) |
The best thing I EVER did was to train my three they are never allowed in or out the front door of my house. The back door is the only door they are ever taken in our out of and only after they sit/stay. I began working on with them when they were puppies. Now I can open my door and they will not bolt. They will sit until I give the command to go. Pebbles is always on the hunt for bunnies, squirrels, bird or whatever might wander into the yard and she will literally quiver but will stay until given the OK. It's the same with my car. When they go for a car ride they are only allowed into the car from the back passenger door and then out through the back driver side door. I can open any other door and they will not come. But when I open the back driver side they will. I trained by putting a leash and harness on them and I would step on the end before I opened the door. Then I'd do sit stay with a treat. It's worked so well and I don't have to worry about them bolting. When Pebbles first came home at 5 months she was a bolter. It was very scary to have to chase her countless times in those first few days. So I made it a mission to get her to learn this command. The other two came along later and learned quickly from her. :) |

They are so smart. Very fast learners. Amazing! |
I have 2 carlson gates both have the small door I really like them, they are easy to put together and up too. |
I ended up returning it. Stupid me forgot to actually measure the doorway I needed blocked off. It was too short to cover my double doorway. Just having to keep an eye on her when we go to the door. |
