Dog peeing but doesn't realize it
 
I have a 3 year old yorkie, who is potty trained already. Recently (twice so far) she had peed while sleeping and doesn't realize she is doing it. We don't realize she did anything until she wakes up. Any suggestions or any idea why she is doing this?

Have you had her thyroid checked. My cattle dog did the same thing, but she was a senior. Put her on meds and it helped considerably. That's the only experience I have.

Has she been taken to the Vet to see if has an UTI?

There are medications that will help with this issue, but she needs to be seen by Vet.

Our Tina had the same problem. When I looked it up I found many references to spayed females losing control when they are sleeping. Something related to estrogen levels and aging. Your dog seems young for this particular condition, though. We had Tina examined by our vet a few times, she could never find anything related to UTI or bladder. But the good news is that she eventually stopped doing it after about 12 months.

Our Tina had the same problem. I noticed it for the first time one evening when she fell asleep in my lap and "let go." It scared me to death, I was worried that she was dying or something. When I looked it up I found many references to spayed females losing control when they are sleeping. Something related to estrogen levels and aging. Your dog seems young for this particular condition, though. We had Tina examined by our vet a several times to try to figure out if there was a physical problem, she could never find anything related to UTI or bladder infection. We got a waterproof mattress cover and started diapering her at night. But the good news is that she eventually stopped doing it after about 12 months.

The best way to find out is to take her to the vet, bloodwork to rule out any medical issues and go from there.

She needs to go to the vet to make sure she does not have a UTI. They are very painful.

Just a few days ago someone else had a thread about this. Her dog had overflow incontinence. She had to make sure she took her dog out right, before it went to sleep for the night.

She does need to be check for a UTI, that is the best place to start. Your vet will need to get a urine sample. He/she may want to send it off and do a culture to see what type of bacteria might be in the bladder so they will be sure to use the right type of antibiotics. They can also have some incontinence problems after being spayed. I have recently gone through this with Molly and she had a bladder stone, so that can be a cause also. Regardless it is best to rule out any medical cause first. There is a medication called Proin that will help with the incontinence if that is what it is.
