when do you stop moistening a puppy's food ? need advice on when to stop moistening my puppy's food. he is 10 weeks old weighs about 24 to 26 ounces. he eats eukanuba small breed puppy formula. |
Welcome to YorkieTalk. I brought my pup home at 12 weeks of age and he was eating dry kibble at the time. I never moistened his food. He had his baby teeth at the time. |
I have a 9 week old he has been eating dry food for about 3 weeks now. I never moistened it, at first I smashed a small amount with a hammer and he took to it right away. He is eating just fine now, no smashing, I make sure he has fresh water available at all times also. He weighs around 28 ozs. and is gaining fine. |
im trying to get Ziggy off mince and his food (i mix the two- he eats Royal Canin). Anyway, I think if your pup came eating dry food, then its fine to keep him on that, no need to moisten it. Thing is, i think they might get use to it and not want to go back to dry. When Ziggy got sick, i had to force feed him, so he had canned food and later his dry moistened with mince and water. I tried removing the mince and water and he wont eat. And being the trained mommy I am, i swiftly returned the mince, no water though. So its still dry. I think dry food is good for their teeth (thats what my breeder and vet said) |
thanks to all who replied. very much appreciated. |
I gave mine the wet food for about a week after they came home and slowly reduced them to just the dry food. That put Abby at 14 weeks and Max at 16 weeks. I gave them the wet food twice a day (made me feel a little better to know they were eating twice a day). Mine are on Wellness Puppy for small breeds. |
Just wean him/her slowly....they will let you know!!! By the way, I have used Eukaneuba for a long time, until I found out it wasnt a very good food...you may want to slowly swtich to a higher quality food!! Good luck and WELCOME to YT!!!!! |
My bigger yorkie was brought home at 12 weeks weighing 2 1/2 lbs. She refused dry kibble - so I kinda slowly reduced the moistened food and increased the dry. My little guy who will be 15 weeks tommorow is 25 oz and has been eating strictly dry food since 12 weeks.. I guess it all depends on how the pup handles it! |
