Sad news from my breeder. My little babies are doing great and had their first visit with the groomer yesterday. So I decided to send a pic to the breeder with an update on how they are doing since my furbabies were from her first two Yorkie litters. Same daddy, different mommies. The mommies are her babies, sleep with her, are spoiled in a good way, and are super sweet. The breeder thanked me for the photo and the update on my babies. Then she told me that she lost Abby's mom suddenly last week after she picked up a Colorado River Toad. She picked it up in her mouth and died within five minutes. Because of the recent monsoon rains, the toads have been in the news more lately. Large dogs you can flush their mouth out with water and you may be okay. With the little babies rarely will you be so lucky. |
OMG, I know I live in Florida but WTH is a Colorado River toad? Should I be concern? Are all toads this poisonous? Maybe I should look this up? So sorry! |
How sad... It's crazy that something so small could kill a baby so quickly :( |
Oh...that is so horrible! The thought of somehting that dangerous is very scary. Very sorry she lost her sweet mama, so sad. |

Colorado River Toads, sometime referred to as the Sonoran Desert Toad, are common to the Sonoran desert area. Very common in the Southwest. They are common to Arizona, California - but I hear there are other similar concerns in your area. The breeding season just passed and with the rains we see more of them right now. They have glands behind their eyes and secrete a poison for protection. My friends boxer licked one last year and she said it was like her dog was on an acid trip. She flushed her mouth out right away and called her vet. Her boxer was oaky after a few hours. |
Ugh....never heard of them before now. I knew about the toads in FL. Anyway...just looked this one up: Sonoran Desert Toad (Bufo alvarius) What a sad story. :( |
That is so sad. I don't think we have anything like that around here. We do have snakes but I don't let Gracie ever run loose. I can't imagine having to watch a precious little pet die like that! |
Thanks for the information. |
Oh wow, we have a pond in our backyard; this is not good news at all, but thanks so much for the information. So sorry that this happened to your breeder. |
That's horrible! I don't think there are any toads or frogs like that in Wisconsin. I sure hope not. |
I'm so sad for her.:( The other day, I let the dogs out in the fenced in backyard. Guess what I found when I stepped off the landing? A 4ft blacksnake!! Not poisonous, but sissy was sniffing at it and if it bit her we could have had a problem with infection. I am deathly afraid of snakes and you should have seen me out there picking up the babies!! I had to get way to close! The GSD's were on their own! |
It's common here too. My friends toy poodle died this way. He got excited when it hopped and picked it up. He died pretty quick too. :( She now raises ChowChows and is diligent in making sure there are no toads in her yard. |
