Fighting Hi, hoping someone can help with some advice and experience, we have 4 Yorkies all since puppies, Oscar was our 1st and he is now 2 years, Lucy came next and is 18 months, we then got Ellie and Ollie who are brother and sister who are now8 months, our problem is recently Lucy is attacking Ellie and they both hold on to each others jaws and its difficult to seperate them, non of the bitches have been spayed yet and Ellie is in season for the 1st time, would this be the cause of the 2 bitches fighting, would getting them spayed help this, sometime 3 or 4 fights a day now, no blood yet and in checking their mouths both seem fine, but we are having to keep them seperated to save injury......any advise would be appreciated thanks |
Welcome to YT. Yes, spaying and neutering will help and I would do it if these were my pets. Any 2 dogs have the potential to fight, but my impression reading here is that no one can go at like 2 females. Like some say, they don't call them bitches for nothing. Separating them, especially when they are not supervised, is a very good idea. Is your male intact? |
Hi and thanks for your advice, Oscar has been neutered, Olllie will be this week as were not looking to breed them, it seems to kick off if theres a sudden noise from outside/inside or a cat appears in the garden, when thay start barking it all kicks off, they sleep side by side in their bed once they've been seperated and calmed down, I will get them both booked in and spayed this week, should i get them done at the same time or wait a while in between? Thankyou |
Welcome we are glad to have you. In my opinion it is best to spay or neuter all pet Yorkies. There are many advantages. No unplanned puppies, no heat cycle, certain cancers are eliminated, less wandering, less fighting, less territorial urine marking. |
Thanks Teresa, Ive been reading into this and it seems a common problem, Im quite sure neutering will help and will get this done asap, its just heartbreaking thinking about having to re-home |
There is also a danger of a uterine infection in females that are not spayed. It's best that they not have to deal with hormonal issues. It can cause too many problems. |

Sorry for the delay in answering your questions. Your posts were not showing right away because you are a new member, and Admin holds the first few posts for review. Your questions about having your girls spayed at the same time...I would do it that way. Get everyone taken care of in one day and then they can recuperate together. :) Are they fighting mainly when they get excited, like seeing something at the window as you mentioned? Or are there also fights over toys, food, or whatever? |
Hi, they only fight when excited, theres a few barks at food time but we seperate their dishes to differnt parts of the room and watch them, then we lift the bowls so they know food time is over, it just seems to have got worse this last few days with the 2 bitches, the boys get on ok with both |
If spaying doesn't solve the problems completely, it sounds like this is something that could be remedied without rehoming. Keep us updated. |
Thanks, I really hope so....we love them all so much, its heartbreaking having to keep one away from the others, so my wifes in one room with Lucy and im in the another with Oscar,Ollie and Ellie.......my mates think im daft |

I have 2 males and 2 females. Tessie, Hobbes, and Calvin are close in age. I got Sassy later and until we got her spayed she would attack Tessie, but not as violent as your females. Tessie was too laid back to bother with the efffort. I would seperate Sassy in the laundry room when she went into heat at an early age. They are all spayed and neutered now and it has made for a better Yorkie home, Sassy still tries to boss everyone and they usually let her. She is the baby brat of the house.:D |
Thanks for advice Susan, I'm convinced now spaying is for the best and then training classes, determined to try everything before re- homing |
