Doggie Rent 1 Attachment(s) I wanted some input from fellow YT members. My bf is leaving because he found a job closer to home. We moved to LA together because I have school. Well, I have to stay here for another year and it's just been frustrating trying to find a place within my budget and also allow dogs. Well, the girl is asking additional $50, but I lowered to $30, a month for my babies because they take up space (the pen pictured)...Do you think that's fair? The reason I'm setting up a pen is so they will be comfortable while I'm at school because there's more space. I am really not comfortable with crating them. Anyways, I was also wondering if others are paying rent for their yorkies and how much. |
In my apartment complex they charge an additional $25.00 per pet per month. That was on top of the $400 non refundable deposit per pet I paid with my security. By the Way- that is a really amazing set up you have! |
There are lots of apartment complexes that make tenets pay additional rent for pets. |
Is that for both? Does that include the new puppy? I'm sorry if this insults property owners, but I think a pet rent is completely unecessary, and way over the top. I agree with a non-refundable pet deposit, but not with pet rent. If you didn't have a pen, you would have other belongings that take up space. Setting my personal feelings aside, $30 does not sound too bad. I've seen places that charge $80-$100 per pet, per month in addition to an outrageous non refundable deposit. |
Forgot to add, I love the tent in the picture! It's super cute! |
Most of the time apartments will charge extra a month for a dog. PLus there are breed restrictions. More and more places are allowing dogs and this is the reason why. |
We just moved from an apartment that was charging us $45 per pet, per month, plus $400 pet deposit. Seems like a common practice. Pointless IMO but common. |

Just wanted to add, the apartment management DOES NOT charge for dogs. We currently live here in a studio and why we like the complex (one lady has 4 maltese!!). It's the person that's under the lease that wants me to pay $30 monthly rent for my yorkies. I was able to get it down by offering to pay $200 extra refundable deposit. Original plan was that I was suppose to rent the apartment as she already put in 30 days notice. The manager said I can see if she wants to be roommates with me and this other girl. Well, she didn't seem to like my dogs so I chose to rent it myself. Well, I found out today, she retracted the 30 days notice and wants to find roommates now... Now, my option is to just take it or find another place further from campus and more hassles too. Last resort is for bf to take Carmel and Emma with him for until I move out, but I really don't want to do that :( I think I'll just pay the $30 monthly rent. Honestly, I don't think it's fair because the pen doesn't even take up that much space...oh well... |

If you are subletting, it sounds like the person is just making a profit. Try to find another place to rent that won't rip you off, or rent directly from the apartment management company. |
I own now but I never heard of a monthly rent charge. It was typically a non-refundable deposit for the "assumed" wear and team on carpet/etc. Been quite a while since I rented though. |
The new house we are in Charges us 25 per pet, we have 6 pets, the 4 dogs and two cats. They did not charge us a deposit. I was talking to my friend who rents in an apartment building and they charge 400 pet deposit, non-refundable. I think that is wrong. When you are ready to move out, if there is damage then I say keep the deposit, if there is no damage done why should the deposit be kept? Just not right. |
I lived in an apartment that did not require an additional charge per month for having an animal but they did require an additional $200.00 deposit. |

Charging a non refundable deposit is very common here in Fl. as is an additional charge per pet, per month. It was cheaper for my son to buy a house(per month) than to rent an apartment in a nice area. The apartment charged $500 non refundable deposit and $50 per pet, per month ! Also if there were 3 complaints you had to get rid of your pet or move out ! |

Actually to me the non refundable deposit makes sense. My dad is a property manager, and I know what the cost of fixing an apartment is. In a place that allows pets or smoking, the costs to fix an apartment are much much higher. The carpet must be changed (whether the pets make a mess or not) and it must be repainted. The next tenants may be allergic, and the changes incarpet, flooring, and repainting must be done. |

My building, here in DC, charges $500 non-refundable deposit per pet.... and then $20 a month. |
I agree that what landlords are charging for pet rent and deposits has turned into a racket. It is a shame though that bad pet owners have made it more difficult for those who are responsible for their pets. In the area that I live in you cannot find anyone who will rent to someone with pets. They don't want to clean up the mess left behind by people who have let their pets pee all over the carpeting or deal with complaints of barking dogs. They just won't do it. It's a shame because we also have a huge homeless pet problem. All it takes is one experience of tearing filthy carpeting out and having to replace the floor boards to turn a landlord from allowing pets again. |
I never had to pay pet rent until maybe 5 years ago. I've always had the nonrefundable pet deposits. I think we paid $600 here for the pet deposit, but I honestly can't remember off the top of my head - it may have been more like $800. They cut me a "deal" only making me pay $60/month in pet rent for my girls. It seems extreme they need an extra $720 per year on top of the nonrefundable deposits plus the typical security deposit. I'm finding a lot of places call themselves pet friendy, but what that really means is they will allow dogs - they aren't pet friendly at all. There are so many common areas Rory and Lane aren't allowed in - they can't even come in the front office to pick up packages with me. It really bugs me. I can't wait until we decide where we want to settle down and finally buy a house! |

When I lived in NYC there was no such thing as pet deposits or pet rent- so when I moved to the suburbs it was a little shocking to be hit with all these fees- but I checked around a lot and all the nice complexes charged it- the only places that didn't were private landlords which I didn't want to deal with. I hate paying it and I don't think its fair- I understand a deposit IF they ruin something, but making it non refundable seems unfair, and I don't understand how they cost more each month- when the whole apartment is mine anyway. But, it was the price I had to pay to live the way I wanted and obviously, they come with me wherever I go so I didn't feel I had a choice. Someday I will have my own house and not have to deal with other people's rules. |
