Pig Ears?
 

To give or not to give 'em?


Our trainer gave us one, after his last class. I let him try it and he loves it... But I have heard different opinions, but haven't heard the reasons why. Can anyone tell me what they think?

My girls get them once in a great while but only when I can watch them -

I know many people don't give them to yorkies but after talking to my vet about them - they said the big dogs are the ones who they really see the most of - they will take actual bites and can choke - where yorkies who have a much smaller mouth will mostly get them gooey - but I've heard choking stories in the past -

I think you just have to use common sense - don't leave them out when you aren't right there to watch them.

my pom loved them but had a lot of tuumy troubles. When I cut out the pig ears she has not had one problem with her tummy! I switched her to greenies but now after everything I've read on here I may have to cut them out.

Thor loves pig ears. I havent had problems with them but I do watch him closely! They keep him busy for hours!! Not much else can!

Well, I don't have an opinion one way or the other since I have never bought any, but I thought this was a good place to insert some humor! :D

Pig Ears And My Dog

Abby's addiction started a few months ago. While shopping at Target, I took a spin through the Pet section. One Dog toy caught my eye. "l'oreille de boeuf de prime!" the bag exclaimed in French. Beef ears eh? Why the bag had French on it, I have no idea, but it sold me. I picked up a sac of beef ears, which suspiciously looked like pig ears and continued on.

Little did I know what I was getting into. Abby the dog enjoyed the delicious French ears, and soon enough I needed another bag. I purchased three bags this time, so I wouldn't have to return to the crowded store for a month or two.

The first bag was devoured in one week. Soon enough Abby found out where the other two bags were kept, she would sit at the closet door clawing and barking until she got her next hit. Only one thing was on Abby's little doggy mind, getting her next beef ear fix.

Then things got worse. Abby built a tolerance to whatever the crazy frenchies were putting in the ears. She would only eat the ear for a few minutes then bark for another. She became obsessed, stopped playing with the Frisbee and cut off relations with other doggys. Soon, my own dog was mugging me. No ones ankles were safe from Abby's wrath unless she had an ear to calm her down.

She is out of control. The house has become gang turf. She controls the living and dining room, and is taking the fight to the kitchen. The dog I see is just a shell of her former self.
The ears have ruined her life.

Fellow dog owners, talk to your dogs about the dangers of beef and pig ears. Warn them, they will listen.

Just say no!

Mason is allergic to Pig products...Watch your little one for signs of Allergy I have heard alot of dogs have Pork allergies..:)

While shopping at a 99 cents store near my job (they have lots of those in NY) i spotted a bag of lamb ears in the doggie section. I bought them for Nikko and he went crazy!! He would eat them up in minutes and look to me for another one right away. He went through the bag in no time. when I went back to the store they had already sold out. I hear that lamb products are good for dogs who have allergies to other things. If you are concerned about pork allergies maybe you can give the lamb ears a try. they certainly were a hit with my furball. :thumbs_up

Oooooh yes, Mason has had his share of Lamb ears. He is very spoiled!

I give my babies "better than ears"- they are not really pig ears. They are some type of highly-digestible man-made product.
They LOVE them!
And I don't have to feel bad about any of the piggies losing their ears... :D
I do have to cut them up into a smaller size so they are a little more managable. Makes the bag last longer!

I am a mean mommy. I don't give any chewys except once in a great great while a flossie from Merrick.
I am scared they are going to choke, it happened to Rio once AND they chew their beards right off.
So they have their nylabones which are only good for a tease the other toy but they do not go crazy chewing.

My little one loves pig ear. Since I never even try to cut the piece down, she had to step on the ear to chew it. It keep her busy for hours but the pig ear didn't really get much smaller. I mean you can see it have been chewed on but she usually lost interest as the color changed. I guess it just doesn't smell the same after a few days. They are still pretty much the same size as they were by the time I change it out.

I was concerned so I watched her very closely for a while at first. Now I do a daily check up if I were to leave a piece in her playpan. Luckly, my little one is not a heavy chewer so it works for us. It would be a good idea to pay close attenion if you want to try it out as every pup is different.

Humm your story sounds familiar. Moose is addicted too, I better sit her down and have a chat before it gets out of control and I have to send her to PUPVI Hall, I don't want my pup having a record :D

My friends dog is the same way,, she gave her one,,and she projectile vomitted and had the runs for 2 days, would'nt eat, or drink, and barely moved,, she took her to the vet and she had a allergic reaction and he said ALOT of dogs are allergic,and ya don't know it until it's too late. :eek:
