Jackie O ate Enapril!!! Jackie O ate 5mg of Enalapril (High blood pressure pill)! It was her uncles (pug) pill that apparently she spit out and my inlaws failed to see. My vet is in surgery and isn't able to talk. I called her uncles Vet and she said it will just make her hyper(just what we need and even more hyper puppy) and she suggested to boil down 4 prunes and let her eat it. She actually really liked it I guess cause it's sweet. Jackie O now weighs 6.5lbs. Anyway I was just hoping for some advice as I am still freaking out! |
They didn't just have you induce vomiting? Unless you really trust the vet you talked to, I'd keep trying to get ahold of yours. The normal dose is .25mg/lb, so this was quite a bit of an overdose. |
I think you need to contact another vet |
I am not a vet, but I would think it would have the opposite effect...make her tired..it is for BP..anyway..I would not have given prunes...you do not need a dog with loose stools on top it all...make sure you get through to the vet...but I doubt it will hurt her much since it a medication canines can take..not sure of the dosage. |

I would contact the animal poison control line and look for an er vet, ASAP. If her blood pressure drops precipitously there will only be a short time before cardiac arrest or permanent organ damage occurs. |

Spitfire, I hope you find some answers soon, best of luck! |
I agree w Rhett's Mama. I would be taking her to an Er vet or to your vet as an emergency. This is going to drop her blood pressure. She needs to be where someone can monitor vital signs and administer fluids/meds as needed. |
She is also right about calling poison control. |
At .25 mg/lb, if your dog is 5 lbs, that would mean her safe dosage would be 1.25 mg. If my calcs are right, 5 mg is the dosage for a 20 lb dog. |
I realized that it was 5mg and not 10mg. We have a nurse in the family. And she is taking her vitals every 5min. I am giving her plenty of fluids with a syringe. I spoke to another vet and she said that she would be ok but just watch her like a hawk. He said that he has given yorkies 5mg before. I'm currently next down the street next to a vet hospital so I feel comfortable having her relaxing here and eating her bully stick. When I took her outside to see if she would poop she was eating a bunc of grass. From what I under stand grass = fiber so I guess she wants to poop. Also hopefully there isn't a next time. But if I need to induce vomiting what is the best way? A finger to the throat? Thanks everyone for your advice. |
They eat grass to induce vomitting when they have an upset stomach, so be prepared. The normal way of inducing vomitting in a dog is with hydrogen peroxide, ask your vet for the correct dose based on your dogs weight. Oral fluids might be helpful, but if her bp drops she's going to need IV support. http://www.wedgewoodpetrx.com/learni...inary-use.html |
When a dog who doesn't normally eat grass does start, they are usually highly nauseated. Well, you can't take BP on a dog at home and only a vet can give you the correct safe limits for pulse and respiration in a case like this. I have nurse friends also; however, they know nothing about dog health at all... Not sure why the vet didn't tell you to induce vomiting, and if two said it is fine, I guess there is nothing more to do. But I'd be calling poison control. If there is reason to watch her like a hawk, then there is reason to be very concerned. |

I bet your nurse friends are like me, we know enough to know some of the things that can go wrong so we high tail it to the experts. |
