I am pretty sure that pita has a cotton coat. It is very fluffy and crazy looking on most days. It will dry wavy and gets matted easily underneath her belly. She looks like a ragamuffin even the day after a shampoo. I mean it really looks like I never brush her hair when that's all I do. Any suggestions on the right shampoo for her and what cut works best...THANKS A TON!

Zhoie is a cotton coat and I've not found any miracle products yet ;) I started shaving her back short and long hair on face and legs, that works great for us.

Just wanted to say your baby is gorgeous!

Sometimes I'm really not sure if she is silky or cottony by reading descriptions online, lol! :D

I think the people who usually question whether or not they have a dog with a cotton or silky coat usually have a cotton coated dog. I wasn't sure about Cooper, my cotton ball at first until my other dog Max's hair started growing out. Max's hair is quite thin, very straight and doesn't mat but it tangles. Cooper's hair grows outward instead of down and tends to get very full and fluffy. I've recently learned that a shorter haircut is much better for him.

I had to look at your albums. Pita's coat looks just like your Max's coat. Pita's is thin, staright and stringy looking, except her butt right now is more wavy and shorter. I'll post more pics that show her back.

I also should have realized that Cooper is a yorkie/maltese mix. Sometimes I forget and just post without thinking:rolleyes: Max is definitely silky, but I sometimes refer to him as stringy. His coat is gorgeous after a bath but in about 3 days he looks like a mess. He never mats but his hair does tangle. I probably need to upload more recent photos too.

Your baby looks silky to me... i think matting can happen to any coat though. My Dexter is cotton coat and he is VERY dark. His tan is dark tan, his black never turned steel grey, he is still jet black. His coat is VERY thick and does not lay flat against his body at all. Its like he has an all over wavy afro. The ONLY thing that works is getting him shaved by the groomer. Whatever the groomer uses and the shortness of the cut can get me 2 months mat free with him, then he minimally mats for a month before he goes back. Right now he's WAAYYY overdue for grooming and he's a MESS. Knotted EVERYWHERE. Even the top of his head mats. He WILL NOT let us brush him, he FREAKS out and I eventually get sooo worked up I have cried out of sheer frustration with him. I say every time that I give up, but I keep trying to get him used to the brush... just not happening! I just have a messy pup (and my other boy, his litermate, is so silky, hes never matted once in his life!) go figure!

I love her coat no matter what it is...I just want to find the best shampoo for her hair texture, I really don't like what I am using right now. It's a puppy shampoo but I think it makes her eyes run!

Honestly the best thing Ive found to do with a cotton coat is to keep it short. Ive tried to grow long hair on my Jewels but she would get matts that were painful to her to get out and also she looked unkept unless she had just been groomed. I love a groomed look and have grown to love shorter hair on a yorkie. My groomer does keep a little length on the face so you do have a yorkie look just a short clean body

Thanks for the info. Pita's hair on her back does lay flat except for a portion on her butt that isn't as long as the rest. And she doesn't get mats all over, just on her underside where she lays the most(so i think you are right about them all getting mats)...great help, thanks.

Sophie is cotton coated. I keep her in a puppy cut. Her belly was prone to mats but her groomer keeps her belly hair shaved and it hasn't been a problem at all. Your baby is a cutie pie:)

I think Minksheen is great! Since I bought a gallon I have had my friends try it- Now they say their dog feels like Ziva- silky!
Ziva went to the groomer on Monday and my DH said she's not so shiny like when I bathe her. I finally gave in and gave her another bath today- she is soooo happy and way shinier!

Not sure what others might say about this... but I found Johnson & Johnson baby shampoo works pretty well but it's not dog shampoo. I think the ph of it is fine for dogs thin skin though, and it makes my boy soft and silkier so he does not mat as badly. My poor baby just has a TERRIBLE coat. I hate it, he hates it. No matter what, he never looks good except straight from the groomer. Poor little guy! I love him to pieces though! I learned to love his tiny body shaved too! :)

I used Johnson & Johnson Baby shampoo on our first yorkie, Baby. For Sophie I use Yorkie Splash shampoo & Yorkie Shine conditioner. I like it much better for the feel of her coat and the long lasting scent.
