Introducing my little Sheltie…let me explain... I began working from home 4-days a week several months ago (after 20+ years of commuting). I decided that I needed a puppy to keep me company during the day because I’m home alone. I decided that my puppy had to be a Sheltie. I researched the breed and talked to breeders and finally found the pup for me. Well my husband did not want a dog in the house (yes…he said dog!)…but eventually he relented. He initially agreed to the Sheltie…but…since he really did not want a dog in the house and the Sheltie was a big dog (I don’t think so)…we agreed that I would NOT get a Sheltie. Our compromise was that I would get a small dog. My heart was broken…I could not have my Sheltie pup! About a month passed and I was ready to negotiate again with my husband about what kind of pup I could get…we agreed on a Yorkie. I had NO experience with Yorkies, do not know anyone who has a Yorkie. Frankly…I just needed some company and I figured something was better than nothing…what an attitude! I searched our local classified ads and called a lady who had an AKC pup. On 8 Oct we took a 1.5 hour drive to go take a look. The lady had been waiting for us and greeted us quickly upon arrival. She told us to wait while she got the pup. She went to the backroom of her house and brought out a little black/tan puppy. The puppy was very shy and started shivering. The lady looked a bit alarmed and stated that the pup had never done this before. I held her for a bit (as she shivered). My husband and daughter just looked on and smiled. My husband asked me, what was that “crusty” stuff on her ears? I said I didn’t know. We’ll, I wasn’t impressed with the pup. I asked my husband what he thought…shrugged his shoulders and said it was my call. For some unknown, CRAZY, reason…I said “ok…” wondering ….”What did I just do?” My heart was not really in this. We got the pup home (she shivered and got car sick on the way home). I immediately offered her some water (with a bit of Karo syrup). She sipped a bit. Offered her food which she refused. I’m again thinking…what did I do? I noticed that she was scratching her ears A LOT. She was smelly too…what did I get myself into? I bought a mite infested, ear infected, shy, itchy, smelly little rat looking (expensive) little creature. AND… I noticed that the lady’s name did not match the name of the breeder that was on the AKC paperwork. She did say that she was selling this pup for her “aunt.” Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh. Needless to say, we have totally fallen in love with this little Yorkie girl…Lolita “Lola” Francesca. She is so smart (up, puppy kisses, sit, down, rings bell, doing VERY well at potty training…goes on pad and will ring the bell to go outside. She does have an accident now and then…but that’s ok, she’ll get it! She doesn’t bark (well...10 times so far)…but she does makes these baby noises! She just melts my heart when I look at her…sorry…I’m gushing…I just never thought that I could be in love with a “dog!” Our union was meant to be…I call her my little Sheltie. I will post some pics soon and will eventually get an “avatar…” posted if I can every figure that out! THANK YOU ALL for your postings. I think I have read every posting on this site! I have learned so much from you…I cannot properly convey to you all…how much you have helped me and Lola! |

Ahhhhhh, a yorkie, not a sheltie. After all, you really did make the very best choice for unconditional love and more fun than you could ever imagine. :D |
Welcome! You made the right decision!I grew up with Shelties and my brother has 2 and they are nice dogs but I love the yorkies size and personality. |

i am so happy for you! it is so hard to turn away from one of these little angels, I know how you feel. glad to hear you have turned out to be so happy with her. the training seems to be going great...way to go! :good job: |
Welcome and I love your story. I too have a husband who thinks all dogs belong outside. It took alot of work to make him see otherwise. I've said it before and I will say it again, he thought if a dog wasn't herding cattle, guarding a chicken coop, or securing the perimeter- why and the heck have a DOG! He grew up that way ( in the country) where as I grew up with animals in the house. Cats, dogs, iguanas, rabbits, hamster etc.. but I knew if we got a big dog and stuck him out back- that is where he would be today- OUTBACK! I wanted a indoor family dog. We have had Roxie for 9 months ( she is almost a year) and my husband loves her too. She went to the groomers this morning and was gone for several hours. My husband actually said, "Geez the house is quite without Roxie! " See he missed her too. So just wait! Yorkies are loved by all! :p |
oh what a great story i cant wait to see pics of her. thats like me i looked for a puppy for so long but i knew one day that the one that was meant for me i would finally find and i did!! i love her with all mt heart and i know you will yours to,that was the puppy meant for you!!!! post pics as soon as ya can |
Welcome to YT! I enjoyed your story and yes, regardless of how we acquire our babies, we love them to pieces! You sound like a great mama and I can't wait to see pictures of your little "sheltie"! |
Sweet story. Welcome! |
Love your story!! I have 2 Shelties, 2 Yorkies and an Eskie. I had wanted a Yorkie for years, but my husband didn't want a small dog. So about 13 years ago I 'settled' on a Sheltie with a second one following 2 years later. (The 4yr old Eskie has her own story!) While they are all my babies, and smart, sweet, loveable animals, and I love each of them dearly, the Yorkies truly are special! They have so much personality and attitude! They have really captured my heart! With my Shelties getting on in years, I finally got my first Yorkie this spring and the second one earlier this month. The fact that they're small , easy to handle and don't shed is just an added bonus! :p |
Oh yeah, Welcome! :D |
I so enjoyed your sweet story and just like your dog "union" was obviously meant to be...I think your finding this forum was as well!! Can't wait to see your pictures and hear more about you and your new love :) A BIG warm welcome to you from my little bunch!!! :) |
Welcome to YT! We have a Sheltie(Jilly), a Schnauzer(Tara), and a Yorkie (Olivia)here at my house. I love all our girls, but Jilly can be waaay too hyper for me sometimes. But if Lola would like an internet sheltie pal, she can get an account at www.dogster.com and ask Jilly to be friends! www.dogster.com/167545 You found a great website! |
Congrats on the new baby. Sounds like you made a good choice for both you and your husband! You probably will be happier with your yorkie anyway, since you stressed that you just wanted company. It's been my experience that yorkies are more for laying on your lap...while shelties are play, play, play, run, run, run, play, play, play, play, play. Probably not a good choice if your husband didn't really want a dog in the first place. A good friend of mine has a beautiful sheltie...and although I love her...I wouldn't want to live with her 24/7! :D (the sheltie...not the friend) |
I don't know how much you paid for your baby, but THAT is not the point of my post. The breeder should have helped with your vet bills!! The condition of the puppy does not affect how much we soon grow to love them, does it? They have a magic all their own and seem to put a spell on us hoomans.. I look forward to pics too... |
Welcome to YT and congratulations on your decision! We have had our little Toto for a little over two years & our lives were totally transformed ... she is our joy!! ;) |
