I have a little jumper Well first let me say its my fault she jumps I allowed her to do,I didn't care that she jumped upon the chairs and couch I have very thick carpet and didn't think anything about it she is very tiny 8 months old and weighs 4#. But have been reading a lot of post on here about they shouldn't not be doing a lot of jumping, due to causing leg and knee problems. So now I am wondering how to get her to quite doing it. Any suggestions would be welcome, Ilove this yorkie talk I have gotten so much good information from all you guys on here |
I dont have any advice but...I know my Tibbs broke his leg from jumping off a really high porch so we try not to let him jump a lot or take him anywhere whit high surfaces. |
me too! I'll also be looking for help on this one. We've had our new baby Gracie for only 2 weeks and only the other day did she figure out she could jump on the chairs in the room she's confined to (my den/office where she and I live all day). In other areas (pee pad, sleeping in her crate) she's doing great. This is the first activity where the 'bad' behavior comes before the 'good'. With piddling, we reward her for using the pad. For jumping, I try to keep a close eye on her and utter my 'I disapprove' sound when she looks like she's getting ready to jump, but my goodness, I'm uttering it every second! I hate to start rewarding her for getting down (which she hasn't done yet - I've had to put her down) because for pee pad training she figured out that if she squatted she got a treat so she'd do it even when she didn't need to pee! I don't want to start her thinking that if she jumps up and gets down she gets a treat! Help! |
You could try teaching them to use pet stairs/ramps and that jumping is not how the way to get to where they want. You could sit on the couch and have them to sit on the floor next to the couch and after waiting, say "good job!", give a treat and lift them up. Repeat. Or if you get pet stairs/ramps train them to use those with treats so they know if they use the stairs they will get a treat. Every time they jump, use a "uh uh" or some kind of no, so they are aware that this is not how you want them to get up there. I hope this may help some. Goodluck! |
My little man jumps down from our bed and he makes me sooo nervous coz his legs are twigs! I am starting to look for steps since I am always leaning over to get him up on the bed! My hubby will just LOVE that idea! My lil bud is sooo spoiled! |
When our older Yorkie-(9 pounds) could no longer get up on the sofa to lay by us, we found a child size stuffed chair in Target and placed it in front of the sofa for him as a half way up - he was able to easily lift himself into the chair and then onto the sofa. He sadly has gone to the Rainbow Bridge, but our new little pup (4 pounds) has learned to use this. We also have covered different size foam blocks with fabric (from JoAnne's fabric Store). I let them jump on and off the couch, I tried to use stairs, I tried pillows, I tried the NO, the disapproval sounds.. nothing worked. So we got stairs for the bed since it's higher than the couch (my boys are not tiny, 6#s and 13#s) well they use the stairs to come up on the bed all the time now. It took a few weeks, but they go right up them no problem.... however, they WILL not use them to get down. They jump from the bed to the floor. I have rough and tumble boys, I guess. :) |
I dont let poppy jump on anything... only time she gets up is if i lift her up. |
Zoe is like a gymnast. When jumping up it's like she levitates...going down it's like she's competing in a long jump contest. I don't know how I could ever stop her, but I do worry about her. She's only 3 lbs or a little above, but she's an athletic little 3 pounder. She had stairs, but then once she figured out she could jump she quit using them. If you figure something out, let us know! |

If they have already started its hard to get them to stop. Callie was used to jumping for at least the first year of her life but then I was told she has LP and that jumping is bad for that and I tried to get her to use the stairs but when she jumped and ended up hurting her front leg (and we are not talking a small yorkie shes 16 pounds) the orthopedic surgeon found that her front leg over extends out when she jumps and lands so it got very important to keep her from jumping with the LP and the problem with her front yard. I have to remind her sometimes when she is looking like shes going to jump I say stairs and she most of the time then goes to the stairs and uses them. |
Try doggie steps. If you check out our website in my signature you will find some very sturdy doggie steps. A few people on YT purchased them and said it only took a few treats to train their pups. I tried the cheap steps at Petsmart and they wouldnt go near them so my hubby decided to start building them as many YTers were looking for good doggie steps. Toby uses doggie steps to get in and out of our bed all the time. |
