My puppy is home too early? Okay i wasnt getting any responses on my other thread so I am going to make another. I had NO IDEA that I wasn't supposed to bring a Yorkie home until 12 weeks or more. I did some research prior to getting him (have done years of puppy reasearch but only a couple weeks of Yorkie research) and I did not see anything that said that. I just now googled it specifically but got very vague answers. Can someone please tell me why this is? And what I can do to help the situation? thanks. |
Puppies learn alot of things from their doggie mammas. That's why it is better for them to stay with their moms and littermates til 12 weeks. |
How old is he? And how much does he weigh? |
What kind of things? How can I substitute those things? How can I help him learn and experience the proper things at this young age? What should I expect from such a young puppy in terms of behavior and what not? I'm anxious now... |
If he is over two pounds and at least eight weeks old you should be fine. I brought one home at seven weeks and one at fourteen weeks. They both did wonderful. No issues. Potty training was not bad. Of course you must make sure they eat well and drink well so their blood sugar does not get to low. good luck with your new pup |
From 8-12 weeks they learn canine ettiquete. They learn bite inhibition, and mommy starts the potty training process. I think it's easier for them (the pups) to handle potty training and he transition into a new home. not to say that it's always hard. You might be one of the lucky ones that never has issues. If you do, deal with them one at a time. I hope Mardelin sees this post. She gives much better answers to this question. For now, Enjoy your puppy! |
Socialization from mom and siblings and being "trained" by the furmom... Training and socialization is really all you can do now (socializing very carefully with an unvaccinated, unaltered dog). The younger the pup, the more likely you'll deal with hypoglycemia. Good to be with the breeder at the 6-10 week mark where pup can be supervised closely. Sooo supervise closely. Make sure sure pup is eating, gums stay pink and wet, and don't be afraid to make puppy rest after a play session. Sleep is good. |
I got my girl at 8wks. I don't think you should stress yourself now that she is with you. You will be the best mommy you can and I'm sure you will have her best interest in heart. I would just take her to the vet for a full checkup which i'm sure you've done so already. Just watch her closely. Good luck to you both. |
Also, just make sure to give her nutracal often to ensure her sugar levels are normal. |

However, I brought Jackson home at 9 weeks and never had any problems. But he was a bigger guy (already 5lbs at that point) so I do believe it makes a difference. |
Okay, this puts my mind to ease a little. I planned on being persistent with his training and health anyway. I stay at home so this should make it easier. Thanks guys! |
