Best Food for Yorkie Pup? Would anyone be so kind as to share what foods they believe are the best for young, healthy yorkie pups? Toby was sent to us on Diamond Naturals. I like the food okay, but I know that there are better out there. Chloe was a very picky puppy and would ONLY eat Diamond Naturals and the Chicken Soup food. Unfortunately, I could not get any of the Chicken Soup so we stuck with Diamond Naturals. I would like for Toby to be able to taste the best of the best and see how he likes it. He is not picky at all. Thanks for any suggestions in advance! |
There are a lot of opinions on this subject. The health and diet forum has some good ideas. I have a picky eater and had to cook for my puppy for quite a while. Finally ended up feeding grain free food. Nature's Variety has a very good one. Some dog food stores that sell high end foods will have free samples of foods or offer a refund if your pup does not like the food. Look for a specialty store in your area. |
Thanks... Chloe (my almost 2 year old) was so picky. It was such a headache to get her to eat! Her breeder had her on Nature's Recipe or something like that, but she would just not eat much of it here. I tried everything and Diamond Naturals was all that she would eat. Ironically, this little guy came home on Diamond Naturals and LOVES it, however I know while it is better than say, Science Diet or Puppy Chow, there are better foods on the market. With CHloe I spent a day sending emails to companies for samples of their dog food. I need to look for that list again so I can contact them all! Quote:

I don't really believe in "best" foods, I don't think there is any such thing. There are a lot of good foods, and finding a good food that's easy to find, affordable, nutritionally balanced, made by a reputable company, one that Joey will eat and does well on, is what's important to me. By “does well on”, I mean, no vomiting, diarrhea, gas, or excessive eye tearing, one that gives him enough energy and keeps his teeth and hair and skin healthy. So you have to find what's important to you, and then that will be the best food for your Toby. I personally wouldn’t change the food for at least a month after I brought the dog home, that way, any tummy upsets you’ll know weren’t caused by the new food, and it may be something serious. There are several sites that rate food and give them up to 5 stars, but the authors say that they’ve never studied nutrition. I personally don’t think it’s good to follow the advice of someone who’s never studied nutrition. |
I guess the main thing is to know what is actually good for a dog. Many of the cheaper foods have too much grain in them. Dogs are not cows and should not be eating corn or a majorly grain diet. Some of the dog foods also have a for of sugar in them to make the dog like the food. It could be listed a sucrose or dextrose, corn syrup, etc. I think that is one of the reasons so many dogs get fat after a few years of eating those foods. Diabetes is also rampant in domestic dogs. Cancer is another big problem. Just learn to read the ingredient list. If a grain is the first ingredient put it down and walk away. |

We have fed our dogs Nature's Variety Prairie chicken and brown rice formula since we got them as puppies. They have all done very well on it. We try a different formula every now and then, but mostly feed them the Prairie chicken and brown rice. Their foods are formulated for all life stages and the kibble is pretty small. All our dogs love it. |
i am in the process of switching our dogs over. used Beneful for all of Emma's life but now changing to The Taste of the Wild. They are eating like 80% old food still & 20-30% new. TRying to go slowly to avoid tummy issues. |
We were feeding butters Orijen 6 fish, which he LOVED (he is a picky eater). Minimal tearing, and his coat became super soft! We're in the process of transitioning to Nature's Variety raw bison. So far he likes it and eats all of his food in one sitting, whereas he has grazed with other foods. |
