Why heel is important Learned the importance of a good heel this morning... Harley and I were walking down our street and we were crossing past the hospital parking lot, this young woman, didn't even look at the crosswalk before rolling infront of us... I always heel Harley at driveways and pick him up on the street. Had he been infront of me, well it wouldn't have been good... Some people shouldn't be on the road. |
Yep some people are just idiots. I don't do "heel" with my dogs. I do loose leash walking and use the "with me" command. They don't need to heel at my side, but they need to be right with me walking. It's a little more relaxed version of heel and I really like it. I also make mine sit at corners and wait before we cross the street, using the wait and cross commands. |

yeah I use heel lightly too, his heel usually consists of him running up and tagging my leg... but the concept is "be close to me". |
So glad you both are fine. That would have given me more grey hair. |
Good for you for taking the time to teach your dog these things. It always makes me so proud when I see other small dogs that have been taught even basic commands. It kind of makes those big dog people have to eat their words. |
Having always worked in a medical building attached to a hospital, I found out the area around a hospital is one of the most hazardous there is! People rushing to family members in the E.R., husbands rushing screaming mommies-to-be in and such - have never seen such driving and failure to yield/stop/look. And many of them are docs trying to get in FAST. It is surely NOT a safe place for those walking - or driving. Plus, there are a lot of sort of addled people just walking aimlessly around - will talk right into you or out in front of your car. Thankfully, your baby was safe this time. |
When we come to a corner, I say "wait" and they stop and sit, till I say "go ahead". I work at a hospital too and they have sign up-Stop for pedestrians in crosswalk" but crossing is like playing Frogger. |
I do the "wait" at all intersections, too. I say "OK, walk" when its time to cross. I had my big guy first and my 2 little dogs learned these commands just by walking with him. I totally agree that it is important to teach our dogs to walk safely in public - I see so many people who have no control of their dogs :( |
This sounds like a good idea. My cousins husband was walking his little toy pinscher around the block (flat road no sidewalk) and some fool came flying around the turn and ran him over. Poor little boy died and he had to return to my cousin with their dog and news(I guess there was nothing that could be done.) Sad thing too...it was right before christmas and my cousin was 9 months pregnant. She was devistated. :( I will definitely keep her on a short leash and pick her up at crosswalks.( oh yeah and only walk on sidewalks) |
Good lesson! So glad you and Harley are both ok. I have to agree that some people shouldn't be on the road, too. |
