Yorkies and the Cold/Winter We live in Northeast Ohio and get a lot of cold and snow. This will be our first winter with Dash. Those of you who live in cold areas, how does your dog handle going potty outside in the cold? Do you put a coat on him/her and do a quick trip outside in your yard? Do you walk your yorkie at all in the winter? Just wondering what to do about the winter months. |
A lot of Yorkies here love the cold and snow. Check our AlaskaYorkie's videos in the video section. Many people put coats and booties on their dogs. My boys goes naked sometimes, but for our longer walks on cold days, they wear coats. |

When it snows my DH takes the shovel and makes a path and potty area for my girls. I do put coats on them and it is just a quick trip in the yard. I don't do any long outside walks during that time. Instead we find other ways to have exercise. :) |
To just go outside and potty, we don't do a coat. But if we're going on a long walk or will be outside for a while, I keep him warm. He's obsessed with the snow and will stay out in it all day so I try to keep him layered up! We go on more walks in the winter actually because Jackson doesn't really like walking in the heat, lol. But when there's a lot of snow on the ground we obviously skip them. |
we just get out do our buisness and right back in Sometimes if it is kind of nice they will play outside for a few minutes. |
Rocco loves the cold and hates wearing coats or sweaters. I do make him wear them in the cold even if he protests. And i do cut his usual 30 min. walks in to 10-15 min. if it is extremely cold out. |
Thank you! I know she doesn't like the wet, but hopefully she'll do ok with cold for small periods of time :) |
Princess LOVES the snow. I'd throw a coat on over her sweater/shirt/etc. & she'd prance around in it. I hope to get some boots from All Dog Boots to use this year, too. But the cold was a different story. She was fine until we had sub-zero wind chills-then she'd sit and shiver or stand on 3 legs so I thought it was best to use pee pads. But I can't wait to take her out to play again this year.:cold smil:D |
4 Attachment(s) Gracie Ruth loves the cold and snow. We got several snowstorms last year with 7-9" of snow each time. I couldn't hardly get G to come inside. :p The boys, on the other hand, I had to throw out in it to go potty. "No Momma! Myz feetz will getz wet!" DH wanted me to put a jacket on G but I said that her finally getting too cold was the only way I could get her to come back inside. But that I'd be glad to put a jacket on her if he wanted to traipse out in the snow to retrieve her. He said that my method seemed to be working just fine. ;) Attachment 351007 Attachment 351008 Attachment 351009 Attachment 351010 |
Callie wears a sweater in the house during the winter because she gets cold pretty easy so she has it on when she goes out the doggie door to go potty sometimes she even stays out there awhile. |
3 Attachment(s) Its our first winter too an I got my 2 coats! |
Moses LOVES the snow! He was just a tiny lil one last December when we got him, so he was potty trained in cold weather. There were times when it was snowing and blowing, and you could see me out there playing Mary Poppins with an umbrella trying to keep the wind and snow off of him long enough for him to potty. I, too, shoveled an area for him to go potty. When the snow got crunchy enough, he would venture out into the yard because he loved walking on top of the snow! He hates any type of clothing on him, so we would have to really hurry. But on nice days, he loved to be outside in the snow! And he was so cute with snow on his little black nose! |
Mina doesn't like wet yards. We dont have snow very often here, just ice. None of my dogs like the ice,not even the huskey/sheperd mix. All of the little dogs wear a coat (5 of them) to go potty outside. For that I use a coat that has velcro at the neck and around the tummy, easy on and easy off. To go out in the cold to run errands Mina has a coat with a hood. |
This will be Sparky's first winter too... |

I hate hate hate hate hate hate the snow and cold. Pixie is NOT allowed to like it. Though the way she hates the heat, I have the sinking feeling I have a snow baby... She is a pad puppy, but I expect she's going to want to go out and play.. which gives me an excuse to buy cute doggie coats and booties for her, though I will not get the benefit of it, my daughters will, because I have a rule about the snow If there is snow outside, I am inside. |
Harley is indoor trained!!! I use a grid system, rather than pee pads. it's a blessing cause I live in Canada, our snow is usually wet and messy, plus they salt so much here that it is a hazard to thier feet. In the winter Harley usually only goes outside every 2 weeks. I bought Harley this great coat, it's got a fleece lining and a hard shell they come apart and can be used together or individually. We have lots of indoor agility equipment that I made (we compete) so he does that to get exercise, and we usually do weekly classes in an indoor area so he still gets out. If you do walk outside in the snow make sure you either get them boots or a product to protect thier pads of their feet from salt. I use invisiboot, it's a cream that moisturizes and protects the feet. Pawz are good if they fit, but Harley's are too big for him. |
Louie's first winter was last year, and he loved the snow. Especially when it was snowing he would try to catch the snowflakes, and jump in the big snow banks lol. But I did notice when it was windy he did not like that even in the fall weather not a fan of wind. Maybe he knows it messes up his hair do:eek: |
I know Yorkies have various types of coats but my baby has a fine silky coat with no undercoat. She gets cold in the winter because our floors get cold. She always wants to curl up on my lap to get warm but if I am not available she will go under her blanket or curl up with one of the cats. I put a warm coat on her to take her out and have to make sure I dry her feet real well when I bring her in. When the weather is real bad she has a pee pad in a frame by the back door that she uses. |
One of my sisters lives in Columbus Ohio. Her doggies wear coats and booties for their walks and sweaters in the house, if it is really cold. Just to quick pottie no coat. I live in Fl. and yes it gets cold in Dec. Jan. and Feb. My Babies wear coats on walks but no boots because we do not have snow and salt. |
