Introducing a new puppy I currently have a male Chihuahua, and at the end of October I will be getting my female Yorkie :) I was wondering how I would go about introducing them to eachother. I also have 2 cats. |
Hi and welcome to YT! :) Congrats on choosing a Yorkie. There are quite a few people here that went through this or is going through this right now. I'm sure they will chime in soon. :D Please share pics of all of your furbabie. We love pics here. :) |
I hired a trainer to help me introduce a new-to-the-family adult Lab to my Yorkies several years ago. She had me do it on neutral ground, during a walk at a park. We started with them both on leash and proceeded on a parallel path for a while. They were all behaving, so we did let them touch noses early on, then we just proceeded on a long walk. As they grew more comfortable, we let them have more interaction. Only after that did we bring everybody home. I think that helped. There was some jostling for position in the pack in the days that followed, but I think it was lessened by that walk. If you have a fenced park or neighbor's yard where you can introduce them off-leash after a while, that might even be better. Good luck! Let us know how it goes. |

Hi and congratulations on your soon to be new puppy :) I went through a similar situation about 4 months ago. I had a long hair male chihuahua before I got my yorkie! I researched so much (months) haha before getting Dexter (yorkie). Honestly though the best advice I received wasn't from dog experts, but from yorkie owners. Anyway, sorry I know I'm just ranting on... The day I got Dexter, it was sort of unexpected... I had met with the breeder, exchange many questions, but wasn't supposed to pick Dexter up until the following week. Since the breeder was about 2 hours from me I wanted someone to go with me for the drive so my aunt called the week before and said she was free so we headed out. Ok so the point of this story is that I had planned to also have the dogs meet on neutral ground , but since it was sort of spur of the moment I wasn't able to do that and it was COMPLETELY fine. I held both dogs on my lap when i first got there and it was pretty amazing how instantly they were best friends. I do have to say that my chihuahua has a VERY submissive demeanor and is super friendly to every dog and person he's ever met :) so I suppose it depends on the dogs themselves , but I think introducing them at home is completely fine! |
My Chihuahua (Whiskey) is a year and 3 months old. He wasn't socialized well before I got him, so he barks a lot when he meets someone, but if they pick him up and pet him he's fine. He chases the cats around (they play back and forth) and he even thinks our bigger MALE orange cat is his mom. Haha. I read somewhere, I can't remember where, but it said something along the lines that one of the dogs, new or old I can't remember, should be put in their crate. I'll have to look around find out where I read that, because that's really all I remember. I understand why they should meet on neutral ground, so would a walk around my neighborhood with the both of them be alright once I got home with the new pup, or would it be best to go somewhere Whiskey hasn't already been? Thanks for all the replies. |
