Potty Training Question My Hershey is 6 years old and potty trained. He knows to stand by the door when he needs to go potty. He never has accidents in the house when we are not home--he waits and goes outside. The problem is at night. We let him out before we go to sleep and then he sleeps with my husband and I in our bedroom. Our bedroom has carpeting and he seems to be urinating in the room out of spite. He jumps off the bed and urinates either in our room on the carpeting or in the hallway on the carpeting. We always let him out when he needs to go and he usually tells us except when he is on carpeting. We don't want to ban him from coming upstairs but I also don't want my carpets ruined. Do you have any advice how I can stop this? |
First off, it's not spite. I don't believe dogs are capable of that. He is probably going there because he smells it from the past. You need to get a good enzyme cleaner and maybe a black light to be sure you get all of it up. Even when you can't smell it, he can. And if he is marking and it has become a habit, you might want to crate him for a little while at night until he gets past that. They even have nice play pen sort of crates so you don't have to feel like he's in "jail". good luck! |
^^ I agree. How long do you sleep/stay in the bedroom overnight? Maybe it is a matter of Hershey doesn't want to wake you, but he has to go earlier. |
Have you thought about installing a doggie door? Then he would have access to going whenever he needs. Or possibly taking up the water 30 minutes before bedtime. |
Hershey is a very good little dog. He always lets us know when he needs to go outside. It just seems to happen when he is upstairs with the carpeting. I don't think it's caused by him holding it in too long because we let him out right before we go to sleep and he does sometimes wake us if he needs to go and we get up right away. That's why I originally thought it was out of spite because he never has accidents in the other rooms. It makes sense that maybe he is just smelling the urine from the past so he doesn't realize he is doing something wrong. I'm going to try the black light and enzyme cleaner. Thank you! |
if he is used to do it already it will be really hard to convince him to stop... maybe you could lay a pad on your bathroom upstairs to see if he changes to there instead.. good luck!! |
