Itchy Pnut :thumbdown I am at my wits end right now! When we first moved into our house DH sprayed around the house and grass with Eco pet friendly bug spray and also sprayed bleach to clean the cement. It has been about 2 months and Pnut has been sooo itchy! I gave him a bath (usually helps) and put his advantix on, Last night I also gave him one of his allergy pills. I noticed he gets itchy in the evening after he has been in and out from the grass.... I am not sure what to do!!? What type of Bug spray do you guys use in your grass? Tom said he is itchy bc of grass mites?? Tom (DH) said the Pet friendly spray doesn't last as long as the normal spray... I dont know? |
Why do you spray the grass? Is it for fleas? You really don’t need to kill all bugs, some of those critters are good! I'm not sure what eco-friendly means, it might just mean “won’t leach into ground water,” but I suppose it could still cause irritation on a dog if it kills bug. I hate insect sprays and try to use poison food traps, in places Joey can’t reach. The bleach would have dissipated by now. There are dogs allergic to grass, I wonder if that could be the case? I guess keeping him off the grass for a week, might give you an answer. Quote:

I've always had great success with Sulfur Powder. You can find it at most hardware and feed stores. Just sprinkle it out on the yard, water LIGHTLY and it should work for most of the summer depending on how much rain you get or watering you do. It's safe for the dogs, you just will have to put up with a bit of a smell for a day or two. |

I think what happened is that the stuff we sprayed wore off... I don't think that's why he is itching.. sorry I should have explained myself better. :D He is itchy on his body. I even sprayed his gentocin otic solution on him last night... My poor guy. LoL It is kinda of cute, you know when you scratch a dog and they move their foot up and down and scratch themselves as you are doing it. LoL thats what he does now.!! Kinda cute! |
Are you sure it's bugs and not an environmental allergy? Tried Atopica? |

This is the worst time of year for fleas where I live. They love hot dry weather. Some dogs have awful allergies to fleas. Just one flea on them will drive them crazy with itch! I had a dog with this affliction and it is awful. If you have a flea problem you may want to ask you vet for the name of a good fogger for your home. Many of the commercial ones don't work very well. Advantage is a good monthly flea preventative. Sometimes using Capstar to immediately kill all the fleas on the dog is helpful and you can use Advantage at the same time. When our puppy first presented with this flea allergy he had to have a steroid injection to stop the itching. If you have oral allergy tablets they probably need to be used on a regular basis if he is having problems. If it is a flea allergy you will have no more problems once the fleas a totally gone. I know many don't like using chemicals against fleas but after seeing how much our dog suffered from even one flea I was willing to use what the vet recommended to be free of them totally. |

Thank you for the info!! I know he doesnt have fleas, I looked on his body and he has nothing! Also he has been on K-9 Advantix since day one so I know it isnt fleas. I think it is the heat with grass allergies.. |
It's because things die off in the winter... If the vet is certain it isn't a flea allergy, then you could try Atopica (it's an immunosuppressant used for allergies). You can also consider allergy testing and then shots. |
