Am I worrying for nothing?? Took Dudley in last Friday for his yearly check-up. He is 2yrs. old and I thought everything would be fine. Got a call from the vet yesterday and she said his liver enz. were elevated. Should be around 114, and his was 248. She put him on antibotics and Denamarin 90mg. I asked her if it could be liver shunt and she said she did not think so, he would have been born with it if it was. Is that right???? I am so worried about him. He seems fine but I guess I just get scared about losing another one. She also put him on k/d. for 3 weeks to see how he will be doing? Has anyone else had this happen and it turn out okay and nothing serious? |
I have never had this problem but I pray your baby will be ok. |
His liver could just be a little upset. Could wait the 3 weeks and retest. He is young though and what she said about liver shunt is not totally true. They don't always show symptoms right away and they can be acquired. Plus, symptoms of MVD (microscopic shunting) aren't always as pronounced. I'd do a bile acids test on your boy, but that's me. I wouldn't be too surprised if it came back normal though. |

Did he fast before the blood draw? My Dud's was elevated too, but it was later determined b/c i fed him that morning, i didn't know to fast before, CRAZY ME:rolleyes: |
No, he had eat breakfast. But usually I always feed them pretty early in the morning and we took him in sometime after lunch. I only feed them twice a day so it was not like he had just eaten. Don't know if that would make any difference. I talked to the breeder tonite and she said she had never had liver shunt in her lines. I told her I was just worried and thought if it had been that it would have shown up before now. I just don't know because I don't know a thing about it. He did have a snack that was a liver chew a couple of days before he went in for his check-up. I wonder if that could have had some effect. I forgot about that and my vet said it could have been something he ate that caused it to be elevated. |
I honestly don't know anything about liver shunt other than a lot of reading on YT, so I can't offer you any help. I believe you can have an elevated reading but be perfectly fine on a recheck. You and your babies are always in my thoughts and prayers. Please try not to worry too much. I know how difficult that it, but try to have faith. |
I would retest him after use of Denosyl and K/D. I would do a bile acids, but not while feeding K/D. That's just my opinion. |
I just had an incident with one of my pups. He got into treats and ate more than he should have...they are healthy treats, but too much of a good thing did him in. Plus, he does have some intolerances to certain foods. He got sick and started vomiting. Took him to the vet and his lipase and liver enzymes were elevated ... this happened overnight. His labs have always been normal. He is on Metronidazole and is going in on Thursday for a recheck to see if they stabilize. So.....yes, certain foods and treats can alter these levels. Perhaps his liver was just a bit inflammed that day. I think your vet is doing the right thing...recheck hopefully will be normal. Keep us posted...would like to hear the results. |
Thanks, that makes me feel alot better. It very well could have been that liver treat. It was like a hard chewie. We usually always stick to the CEW chews. For now on that is all they are getting for a dental treat. I hope and pray that is all it is. I am just a worry wart when it comes to my babies, and Dudley is just so tiny. Gosh, it seems like it is always something. Never a dull moment around our house with these 4 munchkins. Thanks everyone for your respondses. Appreciate others views so much. |
