Poop talk Gizmo is pooping alot on his new food and he has farts like nobody's business. I noticed the protein content on his food is 37%. Think it's too high and that's why he's going to much? I thought it may have been because of us switching, but it's been awhile now and I'm thinking not. Any ideas? |
It could be that he just has an intolerance for the food. Could be too rich, etc. IMO, 37% is much too high, but not everyone agrees on that... If it has been around 3 weeks or more and he is still doing this, then I'd change foods asap. |

What do you think is a good range? Excuse my ignorance, always had smaller dogs, but not Yorkie small:p |
I agree, sounds like the food is too rich and not the right one for your pup. |
I think 20-25% is good. My adults stay between 18-30ish% when possible. But then a lot of people think a dog can't have too much protein, so to each their own... Protein has never been shown to cause kidney damage in a well done study, but it does have to be metabolized and the body has to get rid of the nitrogen, so the liver and kidneys are certainly hard at work. That isn't stress that I want my dogs' livers and kidneys to have to deal with. |
Thank goodness Petsmart is good at taking food back!:p |
Okay, I'm going to start looking up some foods. He loved the high protein blue buffalo so I'm going to see if the normal and not "wilderness" is too high. One more question, I always fed puppy food until 10ish months. Gizmo is 8 months. Any opinions? |
I don't always necessarily think you should just look at the protein % number alone, either. It all depends on where the protein is coming from. For example, one food could derive a lot of protein from plant-based sources, whereas another does from meat. A dog could do well on a lamb-based food with 37% protein but not a chicken-based food with 37% protein. I don't think one should only look at the number. Ingredients and the company it's coming from are equally important, if not more. But in general, I think 37% is pushing it. Seems a bit unnecessary. I think more active dogs do need more protein but most pet Yorkies won't.... I have always fed high protein foods but never as high as 37%. As for the puppy food, I don't think it's entirely necessary. There are so many all life stages foods out there and I think that, in general, "puppy" and "senior" and breed specific foods are a gimmick. An adult dog can eat a senior food and be fine and a puppy can usually eat an adult food and be fine. Large breed pups must watch out for phosphorus and calcium levels though. |
You might get away with an adult food, but it's probably best to go for the puppy. |
