I picked this book up on my lunch hour at Borders. I have much respect for this woman for devoting much of her life to the breed. I am, however, very disappointed with the information provided in this book because it seems like an ad for Nylabone products. There's more information about Nylabone products and showing than I could even stomach. I wanted to read about history, temperment, tips, anything else!

I actually never read that specific book, but i wanted to know, specially from our breeders, what they recomend as a source of info about yorkies for us mommies:)

Though I am embarassed to admit it... I bought the Idiot's Guide to Owning a Dog. Stewie isn't my first dog, but I figure you can never know too much. So far, from what I've read, it has been a good resource for general questions and tips.

I spoke with Janet several times when I was searching for my pup. She has beautiful dogs. She didn't happen to have a female pet quality while I was looking. She told me about her book but I have never read it, I have however read some articles by her in other publications like Top Notch Toys

I have the book, but honestly haven't read it all the way. haha Yorkshire Terriers for Dummies however is FANTASTIC. You don't have to be a "dummy" at all. I have hundreds of For Dummies books b/c they are chock-full of everything you need to know on whatever subject is being written about.

I am not familiar with this woman's writing's nor have heard of her?

If she is "advertising and pushing a product" she is like so many, a money making hungry person.

Many people out there like that really - sad deal. Sadder yet when it comes to live animals or people. Money is never to come before either I don't think!!

Sandy Lemire has a small book I have found very insightful over the years..but I think it is a bit old now. Form, Function and Fancy I believe it is called.

I have to check out the Dummy guide and the Lemire book.
Schatzie - Janet Jackson is affiliated with the YTCA -- I think she's president actually (I'm too lazy to look). She has many champions in her program. Those facts lead me to believe that this book would be fantastic. It's definitely not.

Janet isn't out to make money on the book. That's probably why the book isn't great, because she isn't a writer. She's very well known and active in the YTCA. She has a wonderful line of champions is active in other areas that benefit the breed active in rescue and what have you. She's very well respected and by no means rich. She's a lady whom loves the breed and has worked very hard over the years to produce a beautiful dog thats within the standard. She does not mass produce puppies. She's really a very nice lady.

I know that she probably is. It just bothers me that every other page says "your puppy woudl just love this nylabone brand crate" or this "nylabone chew toy will make your puppy happy" or "nylabone is fantastic!"

I have to admit that I have read the book also and was not impressed with the book either! I actually have five other books, including Yorkshire Terriers for dummies and I love it!!!!! :thumbup:

I haven't read the book but I have seen it at petsmart. Next time I'm there I'll pick it up and thumb thru it. I'm wondering if it's one of those deals where a company seeks someone out to write the book. Like maybe it was funded by nylabone and they sought out a very noteworthy person in the Yorkie community. Wonder if they publish books on other breeds as well. I'll check it out and see what it looks like.

We bought Janet Jackson's book [among others] when we were studying and deciding whether we would buy a Yorkie. I, personally, thought it had a lot of good information and yes, it does mention Nylabone quite a bit. As a matter of fact, I keep it in one of Toto's bags when we travel to use as a reference. "The Complete Idiots Guide to Yorkshire Terrier" is a great little book! It's very simple and easy to understand. I also bought "The Dog Listener" by Jan Fennell [I believe I mentioned it recently in another thread]. We began using her training methods, which makes very good sense, and the very first day Toto learned not to run to the door and begin jumping on Patrick when he got home from the office! It was amazing! Then we began to notice a change in her personality!! :eek: It was also amazing ... we hated it! She was so sad ... she quit snuggling on my lap during the day and began to lay on the foot of our bed instead of snuggling up close to us at night!! It was horrible ... so, Patrick and I agreed ... the training in the book is wonderful for people who have larger pets ... but we don't think it's appropriate for our baby! We really don't care who's "alpha" in our home ... if Toto wants that role ... it's hers!! It took days to reverse that little bit of training ... the first day she finally climbed onto my lap, I sat and held her all day!! :) I, for one, am going to be very selective in any training method from now on!! I love my "brat" just the way she is ... just a little more obedient!! ;)
