Question about neutering - please. Question about neutering a 6 month old - 4.5 pound pup - We have not had a puppy for 14 years - in calling to inquire about neutering the Vet's office says they keep the pup overnite after surgery - the pup would be alone there - from 7 pm to 7am - we have had five pups (three were Yorkies) neutered during the past 40 years, I don't remember one being kept overnite - I am not comfortable with that - is this the way it goes today? Would appreciate your thoughts - we want to do the best we can so this little fellow can be with us a very long time - Thank you. |
Hi and welcome to YT. I have read that some vets like to keep overnight to make sure that the pup gets adequate rest. If there is no one there, I would speak with the vet and ask them to reevaluate and let him go home. I was able to pick Hot Rod up the same day as well as Maggie after her spay. |
Some vets insist on staying over night after S/N...some do not... I would be afraid of a fire...and it happens. Look for a vet who allows them to go home..even if you have to drive a long way..worth it. |

Same for me. When Kaji was neutered 2 years ago, I dropped him off early (7am I think) and picked him up in the afternoon. We didn't have a pleasant night, but at least I was there to keep him calm and keep him from jumping around. If no one is going to be with your baby, I would talk to the vet and insist he releases your pup. You can confine him just as well at home where you can monitor him. If you feel he is distressed, you have the option of taking him to the emergency vet; whereas at the empty vets office he won't have anyone to take him anywhere or care for him. Not that anything bad will happen. That's just my fear. Welcome to YT, and I'm sorry for scaring you. |
Thank you all for your thoughts - my instinct was saying not a good idea to leave him overnite - especially since I am home 24/7 - going to make some more phone calls - thank you - (appreciate all the helpful information - been reading about vaccinations too!) Have a great day! |
Belle was just spayed yesterday and I picked her up at 7pm. My vet has someone there until 1am, but he doesn't keep spay/neuter patients overnight. She came home and slept on the couch until I went to bed and then slept on my pillow all night.... she's actually still on my pillow now. I see no reason to keep them overnight, especially if no one will be in the clinic to keep an eye on them. |
Louie got neutered in the morning and picked him up late afternoon. I would asked if you could bring him home later in the day. |
Ours came home later the same day. I could understand the vet maybe wanting to keep him overnight so that he could be monitored, but if there isn't anyone in the office, I don't understand the point. I agree with others it would be much better to have him home where you can watch him and get him to the ER if something should go wrong. If your vet does not agree, I would look for a new vet. |
