First post and advice needed Hello everyone at Yorkie talk. We have decided we would like a dog to join our family, and after meeting a yorkie recently I have fallen in love with the breed. The problem is we have 2 cats, and so I would like ask people who have experience of yorkies if they could live together ok, I know at first the cats will not be too happy, but I'm hoping as time goes by and with the right training they could live happily together. What do you think? |
Anything is possible. Your requirements are, time and patient. Good luck. |
2 Attachment(s) Yes than can live together, and be happy. I have 4 Yorkies, had the cat first and they just love each other and get along great. My baby girl Sassy thinks he is her bestest friend. Good Luck with your search for you furever friend. |
Time, Love, and Patience! Our neighbors have a cat. The cat is used to being around dogs in it's own home. It is one of Bella's best friends. The cat is so patient with Bella's need for interaction. I would look at the overall temperment of your cat and then decide if adding a Yorkie is a good idea. Cats are very unique and if it doesn't care for the dog, I would expect it would eventually ignore it. But, Yorkie puppies are very active and needy . . . the cat might just bite/scratch if not kept safe from the puppy's need for interaction with ALL living things. Good luck in making the decision. It's a BIG one as the you are thinking about bringing a new animal into your cat's home. I would never want to see a new animal jeopardize the position of the animals already in residence.:) |
I have 2 cats and they are fine with the yorkies and the yorkies are fine with them. Anything is possible with a yorkie!!!:) |
Oh, and Welocme to yorkie talk... Where are my manners. Alot of knowledgable people here and so caring too. You will learn alot here. |
Welcome to YT. I think it is easier to bring in a puppy or young dog with an established cat than it is to bring in a kitten with an established dog. Give the cats their space so they can get away from unrelenting puppy play and allow them to socialize as they are willing and ready and I think you will be fine. Just be careful at first becase a cat that has not been around dogs/puppies may strike out at first and you must be very careful about cat claws and puppy eyes. |
lol they are all so cute... in the photos |
Hi and Welcome to YT. I can tell you from experience that it's very possible for a yorkie to live with a cat. I have 15 cats between my friend and I we also have a yorkie a shorkie a shih tzu and 2 basset hounds. The cats were with us first and although it was a little bit rough at first everybody gets along great. |
Welcome to yorkie talk!(: And I am sure it is possible, because I didnt think it would be possible to have a yorkie when my nephew was getting ready to turn three and my other nephew was getting ready to be born. Now I have had my yorkie since january, and there are still a few problems here and there but everything is fine! Just the occasional baby pulling dog hair or dog licking baby and the baby cry, or the 3 year old trying to kick the dog but the dog moves. But neither of them ever get hurt! So Im sure it would be easier with a cat then a brat haha! |
Our cat is 4 years old and we recently brought our puppy home and the two get along fine. The cat actually comes around a lot more than she did before because she wants to play with Ella. The cat does swat at her in play and will lightly nip Ella when Ella won't leave her alone and she doesn't want to play. |
Hi, I'm not sure about the cats, because my 3 aren't around any cats, but would like to welcome you to YorkieTalk. Glad you are here, and hope you find that special little yorkie to join your family. |
Welcome to the forum! In highschool I had a cat first..then I got a Rottweiller. Needless to say the Rott was respectful to my cat. My cat "baby" ruled the roost and they got along fine. I think if you introduce them carefully then everything should be fine. :) |
We have a cat and a large dog (Jada) and got a Yorkie (Zoe) about 4 weeks ago. Everyone gets along great. The cat took more to get used to Zoe than Jada but the cat is very tolerant and will run off when she has had enough. Just make sure the cat has a place to go without the new one and they should be fine. |

Just be sure to put the cat food and litter box somewhere up high. For some strange reason my yorkie thinks cat poop are treats. |
